When you run into an old Ford friend at an auto show

I could see it across the hallway. Parked there with its red and white paint gleaming. A strip of chrome down its side and a familiar face staring back. Parked outside a set of Cobo Center doors, the 1965 Ford F100 was practically calling my name.

A plaque let folks know that this truck wears Ford’s twin I-Beam suspension setup under the nose. 1965 was the first year for the F100 to get this suspension. I knew this already. Not because I know a lot of about trucks (I don’t), but because my own Ford F100 was a ’65 as well.

Mine didn’t look this clean though. It’s amazing what proper paint and brightwork can do for an old rig. While my truck was of the aged variety, this is a pristine example showing what one looked like when brand new. Minus the branding, of course.  Sure, mine sounded better than this one. Of that I have no doubt, thanks to the hard work that Tim and I put in when we installed a new camshaft and upgraded the exhaust system.

I bet this one here doesn’t blow smoke though.

Regardless, running into this truck is like coming across an old friend. One you haven’t seen in some time. And it’s always good to see them. I’ve seen my own truck since selling it, and I’m happy to say that the owner is driving it. It’s now a slick means to transport surfboards to and from the beach. And it’s out there living its best life, and I’m happy for it.
