My favorite hill climb-prepped BMW is Georg Plasa’s Judd V8-powered beast. This one from Team Edlinger, however, comes in at a close second. What started life as a BMW 320i has become a monster of the mountain. And that’s due to the V8 engine plucked from an IndyCar racer.
Under the skin of this E30 sits a 3.5-liter GM-built IndyCar V8 engine. Here it makes 570 horsepower and can rev all the way up to 11,300 rpm. This is a BMW sport bike. A BMW M-mmmmmmmm yeah. It’s also a lightweight machine, as the race-prepped BMW has a curb weight of just 1,895 pounds.
With the noise, the lightweight, flat out hot-nasty speed, and occasional sparks flying from the insane bodywork, this car is closer to open-wheel glory than its Bavarian roots. And that’s just fine. In fact, it’s better than that; this is an amazing hill climb monster.
