I’ve been to Road America once. It was to watch the Acura race team test two of its DPi prototype race cars. This is fun for a bit, but it gets a bit old since there’s not actual racing going on. I wanted to go back and watch the races but that wasn’t in the cards for me. Someone else went to the recent IndyCar races though, and they went back… way back in time.
Nick Shirrell is the shooter here. His camera? A 1968 Canon 1218 Super 8 running Kodak film. The resulting footage, overlaid with a piece of period narration, works wonderfully. The frame rate, grain, and handheld quality of the imagery being captured takes you back in time. Even if the cars themselves are modern Dallara DW12s equipped with 2.2-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engines.
Shirrell posts tons of images and videos like this on his and . Both are worth a look.
