Last Call: 4-Door Edition

Peter Tanshanomi October 8, 2018 Last Call

From an enthusiast’s point of view, two-door cars have traditionally been considered more desirable and attractive than their four-door siblings, due to their sleeker looks and racier pedigree. This beautifully sculpted 1969 Dodge Coronet 440 500 sedan, sold at a Barrett-Jackson auction in 2007, stands as a stark exception to that rule.

Conversation Starter: What’s your vote for a model that looks better with four doors than two? Talk amongst yourselves.

If your initial reaction isn’t “Cool BMW M1,” but rather, “Cool paint job,” you should probably become a member of the Facebook group, if you aren’t already.

Last Call: Get In My Belly Edition

As the former owner of a much-loved and much-missed Yamaha WaveJammer personal watercraft identical to the one in this photo, I can honestly say that this 1987 Toyota Mobile Base concept truck would be everything I would ever want in an SUV.

Last Call: Chalk Talk Edition

Ad men are notorious for selling the sizzle and not the steak. Every once in a while, though, the actual technical merits of the product are showcased. The tech-talk in this Suzuki magazine spread from 1976 isn’t really as in-depth as it appears to be at first blush, but the cool graphics sure make it feel as though you’re getting a heady hit of gearhead-worthy data. The chalkboard motif would go on to be used in a whole series of ads in 1976 and ’77.

Last Call: You Light Up My Life Edition

When the Feds announced that center high-mounted stop lamps (CHMSLs) would be mandated for the 1986 model year, everybody and their brother suddenly wanted a third brake light for their older car, either to get a piece of that Federally-mandated safety for themselves, or simply to look like they had a more modern car than they actually owned. Knowing that the window for selling retrofit third brake lights was limited, the aftermarket tooled up quickly, and by mid 1986, over four million CHMSL retrofit kits had been sold to American consumers.

Last Call: Formative Years Edition

Peter Tanshanomi September 27, 2018 Last Call

As a youngster in the 1970s, I grew up with three female siblings and a father who wasn’t much of a gearhead, so I was the lone car enthusiast in my family. Fortunately, even though my dad had no interest in auto racing, he was willing to spend a few summer Sunday afternoons taking me out to the drags at Lancaster Dragway, about a half-hour from our house. As a result, my initial interests in cars was almost completely drag-racing-centric, and at the time, nobody was bigger in drag racing than Don Prudhomme. He would win the NHRA funny car championship four consecutive years, 1975–78.

My seventh-grade teacher, inspired by the 1976 Montreal Olympics, invited us all to bring in pictures of our favorite sports for a bulletin board collage. When the display was completed, my contribution was right in the center: a full-page color photo The Snake, doing a fiery nighttime burnout in his Army funny car.

Last Call: A Very Low Point

Peter Tanshanomi September 26, 2018 Last Call

Land speed record cars tend to be low, pointy, claustrophobia-inducing things. And nothing seems lower or more claustrophobic than this famous belly-tanker built by Roy Fjastad for Don “Beachcomber” Johnson, circa 1961. If it looks scary here, can you imagine what it was like at more than 247 MPH?

Last Call: Street Parked Edition

In Japan, slammed and stretched scooters have been a legitimate thing for a long time, and they don’t come much lower or longer than this one. It doesn’t seem very practical, but it might get some use, seeing as it was captured parked at the curb.
