The Killer ZomBee – A Season Ender to One HELL of a Season.

It’s 10am, Saturday morning at Buttonwillow Raceway in central California, and the sun is finally starting to take the bone-aching cold out of our toes. Around one hundred thirty crappy old hoopties and ultimate driving machines circle the track in a motorized spectacle that can only be described as part Burning Man, part mid-20th century NASCAR, waaaay back when they actually raced street-based cars. Teams gather along the pit walls to watch the start of the race – chatting nervously, giggling and pointing out various goofy themes and creations as they cruise by.

Suddenly the green flag drops, the din grows to a screaming roar, smoke billows and cheers fill the air. The 24 Hours of Lemons “Arse-Freeze-Apalooza 2011” has just begun; a 2-day battle of endurance, perseverance, absurdity, a little strategy and a big steaming pile of plain old dumb luck. … Continue Reading

“Roadtrip… ”

Eight little letters, arranged in such a combination that pings the soul and causes more daydreams than nearly any thing else in the English language.

Many people fantasize about taking the ultimate road trip around the United States, but few actually accomplish the dream. Work, life and responsibilities often get in the way, cutting short grandiose plans or postponing the trip till the perpetual next year, or after the kids graduate from college.

Those that do get the chance to take the ultimate road trip (this author included) nearly always document their journeys with video and photographs. But few are able to capture the spirit and beauty of this great country’s roads like today’s honorary Hoonees has.

Time capsule – 1915 Model T Hot Rod

Sparky June 20, 2011 Nostalgia

Many moons ago a young Sparky and his friends came across a pile of old car parts abandoned in the forest that excitedly stirred our imaginations. While someone looked at this collection of junk as unwanted garbage to be dumped late at night, we saw it as the foundation of our future Hot Rod and spent several weeks over that summer vacation rearranging the parts, and discussing, sometimes arguing about how we we going to build the world’s greatest Jalopy.

Sadly, one day our stash was discovered by “the man” (evil grown ups) and disappeared shortly thereafter. Heartbroken, we soon moved on to newer adventures, eventually trading in our old Schwinns for BMX bikes, and then inevitably our first real cars. But none of us ever forgot about that ghost in the forest, the car that wanted to be…

There are many stories out there like this one, be it a pile of Model T parts in the forest or the hulk of  a much newer steed gathering dust behind a shop or grandpa’s old shed. Many of us have been effected by the spirits of another time that tend to stick with us, haunt us, make us do crazy things.

In recent years there has been a trend to try and recreate vintage Hot Rods close to the original “period” they would have been built in. In some cases these include modern twists and interpretations or compromises in technology, while others are strict in using only vintage parts and techniques that were available back in the day in an attempt to be as “correct” as possible. Some are more successful than others, and many give a good feel for how it could have been done, but nothing can beat finding an actual half century old Hot Rod survivor. … Continue Reading

Real Hoons, Hooning a Hoontastic *Longroof!

On this wonderful Wagon Wednesday, let us pause for a moment and give thanks to the spirit of the Hoon.

From the lands down under, ancestral homeland of our namesake – the , something wicked this way comes.

(*Note: The original post listed this as a Hearse, which came from the video owner’s descriptions and notes, but has had a shadow cast upon the claim. We encourage anyone with first hand knowledge proving or refuting this claim to comment. Both wagons & hearses are cool, but we like to know for sure.)

Hangin… Santa Clara monthly Import Meet

Sparky May 27, 2011 Car Shows

One of the great things I’ve come to love since moving to the Silicon Valley oh-so-many years ago,  is that there are no shortage of gearhead-orientated meets around the Southbay if you know where to look. They often pop up unexpectedly by word of mouth or via tradition in shopping centers across the bay,  and I hit as many as I can each month.

For the past several years one such group of diehards have been getting together for the monthly Old School Import meet in Santa Clara Ca. … Continue Reading

Rapture awareness; Killer ZomBees Attack Reno

Sparky May 21, 2011 24 Hours of Lemons

Just in time for the end of the world, last weekend the un-dead Killer ZomBee MGB, quasi-official race car of our sister site , participated in the 24 Hours of Lemons “Goin for Broken” race at Reno Fernley Raceway.

This grueling non-stop event out in the desert took place over a full 24 hour period, in contrast to the usual 2-day endurance races here on the west coast, with the green flag dropping at 10am on Saturday morning, and the checker finally waving at 10am Sunday.

The bucket of bolts bona-fide race cars of over 70 hopeful teams took to the track, pressing on through the blazing heat of day, lightning storms at sunset, bitter cold of the desert night, early morning rain and hail at sunrise, and (surprise!) even snow.

Yes, hell froze over.

Still we pressed on; trudging thru everything Mother Nature (and competing teams) could throw at us. … Continue Reading
