Long Shots: Mazda 929

While Honda, Toyota, and Nissan were busy rolling out their Acura, Lexus, and Infiniti (respectively) brands, Mazda contemplated an upmarket division as well.  Rumor has it that it was going to be called Amati (an anagram of Miata).  Amati never came to fruition.  But if it had, this 929 would certainly have been the flagship.

Pebble Beach Parking Lots

Jim Yu August 27, 2012 Redusernab Goes To...

On the way to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, your intrepid reporter got lost. Really lost. I ended up at The Inn at Spanish Bay’s parking lot. This upscale resort has rooms that start at the cost of two (2) LeMons racers per night and go way up from there. The parking lot’s inventory, as you can imagine, is extraordinary.

I confess that I am not overly drawn to modern supercars. In my nostalgia-addled mind, the last great supercars were the Ferrari F40, the Porsche 959, and the McLaren F1. But after being exposed to so many modern Ferraris and Lamborghinis over Monterey auto week, I have come to appreciate them more. For their exotica, for their technology, for their joie de vivre.

2012 Concours d’Lemons / Tour d’Lemons Debrief

Jim Yu August 22, 2012 Car Shows

That black material above the Trabant’s engine– vinyl.

It was a perfect day.

The cars were wacky.  The people were in a great mood.  The weather was gorgeous.  And best of all, not a single car broke down during the Tour of the famed 17 Mile Drive.  Click for more photos and commentary.

Concours d’LeMons / Tour d’LeMons is on Saturday, August 18

Jim Yu August 13, 2012 Car Shows

Another must-see next week in Monterey is the Tour d’LeMons.  As many of you know, the Concours d’LeMons event started in 2009 and featured, well, lemons.  It was irreverent and very tongue-in-cheek.  And fun.  There was no snootiness, no pretension, no hubris.

The organizers are taking a well-deserved break this year.  The good people at Hagerty decided to pick up the event this year, with a focus on a 25-mile drive.  If you want to see a number of not-for-the-right-reason-exotics littered on the side of the road with their hoods up, this is it.

Automobilia Monterey next Tuesday and Wednesday

Jim Yu August 9, 2012 Car Shows, Nostalgia

It’s finally here.  Auto week in Monterey is just around the corner.  Most are familiar with the big boys– the Pebble Beach Concours, the auctions, and the Monterey Historics.  But for this diecast car and vintage book collector, is a must see.

The show will take place on August 14 (Tues.) and 15 (Wed.), a bit before the main festivities begin.  It is held inside the Embassy Suites in Seaside.  If you’re going to Laguna Seca, it’s totally on the way.

I love the show because it’s got all the rare posters, diecast cars, books, and miscellaneous memorabilia that you are not going to find on eBay, flea markets, or brick-and-mortar stores.  Vendors from Europe fly here to display their wares.  I’ve picked up quite a few books on Ferraris, Astons, and Lamborghinis there over the years.  My dream purchase would be an original cardboard Mille Miglia sign.  It costs, coincidentally, mille dollars.

Admission is $15 and a part of the proceeds goes to the Monterey Rape Crisis Center.

VIDEO: Nero Does A Pantera

Jim Yu July 26, 2012 Hoonivercinema

Connecticut State Police Mazda MX-6

Back in the late 1980s, the state police in Connecticut was looking into a replacement for its Mustang 5.0 and Buick Grand National (!) speed enforcers.  The 5-0 wanted a car with a high performance engine, front wheel drive (for bad weather), a relatively large trunk, good gas mileage, and a low profile. And, oh, it had to be cheaper than a Crown Victoria. … Continue Reading

World Record for Visiting All 44 BART Stations

Though I own a very thirsty, 2.5+ ton behemoth, I also try to do the right thing and ride public transit whenever possible. Fortunately, the San Francisco Bay Area has a relatively efficient and accessible system of buses, trains, and ferries. On a recent Saturday, I did what I had always wanted to do– visit every BART train station.

All 44 of them.

And because I could find no evidence that anyone else had done this before, I figured that if I visited them all in one go, I would set the world record. I documented my 5 hour 37 minute journey . I plan to write a weekly series for that blog on my travel adventures. For California car show coverage, my path to becoming a used car dealer-broker, and the mechanical/electrical state of my Phaeton, keep reading Redusernab. Thank you.
