Redusernab Asks: What do you want out of an automotive TV show?

As far as automotive shows go these days, it seems networks just take any shop, add a deadline and drama, some poor hair choices, and they’ve got a hit on their hands. Manufactured build shows are seemingly in endless supply, and I’ve yet to find one that captures my attention. There’s more to our shared passion than these shows provide, and someone has to be able to tap into an underserved segment of our community.

Recently, a producer friend asked me to take a look at an episode of a new show he has coming out. It’s all about trucks, and I expected to… not like it, based on the trailer above ().

However, I watched one episode and I’ll share my exact notes from that experience (minus anything that gives away the outcome of the episode):

  • Wish you didn’t call the course the [REDACTED… that’s the [OTHER COURSE WITH THAT NAME
  • Cool jump footage
  • Lovely aerial shots, Nice titles, feels cinematic
  • Names of the trucks are funny – could help create a following from fans
  • Gloss over the fact that the nose is from a WWI-era Bugatti?!?!
  • Honestly expected to not be that into it… but it’s not a straight build show and it was pretty funny. I was legit interested to see who could fling the [REDACTED] the farthest.
  • Don’t care for the trivia bits.
  • The build bit passed on knowledge though, try to avoid the deadline aspect though – which you did a good job. Just reminded of a time limit but didn’t overly stress on it.
  • Good driving shots in the trees during that portion of the course
  • Didn’t like the 360 shot. If you started and did maybe a 180-degree swivel or a less, that shot would work?
  • Even though I don’t like the name, that’s a hell of a course…
  • Come-Along part was awesome.
  • Very pretty static shots in the swamp
  • 2nd 360-cam shot was better
  • Genuinely nervous dude was about to break that [REDACTED]…
  • Aw man… he [REDACTED]
  • That poor [REDACTED]
  • Some good drama here!

I started slow. But by the end I was legitimately rooting for two of the drivers. This show is called Truck Night in America and runs on History starting later this week.

So I went in to the first episode knowing what I didn’t want to see. I wasn’t ready for the fact that this show contained things I didn’t know I’d care about. So maybe I don’t actually know what I want in an automotive TV show.

But you probably do… so let me hear it in the comments below. Well, read it… you know what I mean. What do you want to see in an automotive tv show? 

Redusernab Asks: What’s the best car color?

Recently, I spent a day behind the wheel of the new Audi RS 5. I’ll be cutting the video of that First Drive together soon (and you can read my written thoughts on the car right now). Audi brought out a Nardo Gray example, which isn’t much of a surprise. What was a surprise, however, was the absolutely gorgeous Sonoma Green version that was also on hand.

Automakers are offering a bit more pop in their colors these days, and this Audi is a great example of that. There wasn’t a version with a dark tan interior, but through Audi’s Exclusive options you could order that up… at a cost I’d not like to know.

Regardless, the Sonoma Green RS 5 is here and it’s lovely. But I want to know if there are other colors out there that have caught your eye as of late. I just drove a Kinetic Blue Colorado ZR2 at which I also enjoyed pointing my eye holes.

Reviewed: The 2018 Ford Mustang

It used to be a pony car that was laughed at in places with turns. These days, however, the Ford Mustang is a real-deal sports car that competes with the best the world has to offer. The Blue Oval brand has updated its mean machine for the new model year, and the 2018 Ford Mustang is packing a bit more heat and some fancy new tech behind the steering wheel.

Many hours were spent to bring us the new customizable digital display. More important than that, however, is the horsepower bump. Now the Mustang makes 460 horsepower and 420 pound feet of torque. Additionally, the clutch has been beefed up for the increase in twist and a new flywheel improves the overall NVH.

What’s also rising… is the price. It’s now possible to pay way too much for a new Ford Mustang. This is one damn fine machine, and it’s worth the price to entry at most levels. Spec it out too far though, and you’ll be wondering why you didn’t opt for that flat-plane crank V8 and some Shelby badges.

[Disclaimer: Ford tossed us the keys to the 2018 Mustang and included a tank of gas. We only tested line-lock once. Okay fine… twice.]

Redusernab Asks: What’s the most iconic wagon of all time?

It’s Wednesday. The holy day in the middle of the week when we praise the longroof. In thinking about wagons, I was curious as to which of all the greats might we consider to be the most iconic? 

In the modern era, it’s likely to be a Mercedes-AMG E63 or the Audi RS6 Avant. Back a few decades, we’d say it’s the Volvo 245. You can step back along the Volvo family lines even further, however, and arrive at the 1800ES and the Amazon.

In the more American side of things, we have the Country Squire and Country Sedan. There are others of course, but the Fords stand out most fresh in my mind.

Of all the wagons, which is the one that stands out as the most iconic machine to wear the longer roof? This is a tough question with many answers, so I look forward to seeing what arrives in the comments below.

Redusernab Asks: What’s your Powerball-paid-for fantasy island car?

I was just on vacation with my wife and daughter. We went to an island. I can’t afford to live there, but I can certainly day dream about what that might be like if I could. In this fantasy world, I’d need to vehicle to get around the island and I know exactly what that would be.

Basically, I’d roam my new island home in my Dodge Charger set atop a Pro2 (or maybe Pro4) trophy truck chassis. Inside, the cabin would be reworked so as to provide some minimal level of creature comfort but not too much. I’d be able to drive… anywhere, and I’d also still be able to say I was driving a muscle car (of sorts).

If you were to win the Powerball jackpot, what sort of fantasy island car would you drive? Yes, Fantasy Island car but I expect other answers besides a chopped up Plymouth Volare. Okay, some other answers… this is Redusernab, so that answer definitely still works here too.

First Drive: Jaguar E-Pace

Crossovers are currently where all the cash sits. Car buyers want them, and automakers keep cranking them out. That’s how we wind up with a vehicle like the all-new Jaguar E-Pace.

It’s the baby of the Jaguar crossover bunch, but that doesn’t mean it’s simply an entry-level cash grab. Okay, it’s sort of that… but it’s actually pretty good as well.

We trekked to Corsica to sample the new smaller Jag not-a-wagon, and we were more than pleasantly surprised. Under the hood is a healthy Ingenium four-cylinder engine that cranks out 300 horsepower when you get the P300 model.

On-road and even off-road, there’s clearly some Jaguar and Land Rover DNA to be found. While we’d prefer an XE wagon, we’re not getting a lame duck with the E-Pace.

This one might surprise you… it certainly did that for us.

Redusernab Asks: What is the best rap/hip-hop car of all time?

One of my favorite songs of all time is . The beat epitomizes everything perfect about early 90’s West Coast hip-hop. Snoop crushes the track with his signature flow, and the entire album has sold well over 11,000,000 copies to this day.

During the song, there’s one line that always sticks with me. It’s when Snoop mentions his ride; a ’78 Coupe DeVille. The car itself wasn’t anything special, but to Snoop it was the shit at that point and time in his life. Hell, it still might be to this day. Regardless, the car fits the song and the time period perfectly.

What is the greatest rap or hip-hop car of all time though? I don’t think it’s the ’78 DeVille, even if it’s a part of one of my personal favorite songs. The ’64 Impala is definitely on the list somewhere. Modern rap and hip-hop love flashier machines, but I’m not sure a current Rolls-Royce really deserves a nod here.

Truck Central: Dodge stuffs the 6.4L Hemi in the Durango SRT
and it’s real real good

I’ve been reviewing trucks for a new YouTube channel called, appropriately, Truck Central. Recently I spent some time with the new Dodge Durango SRT. The FCA folks seem content to Hellcat everything, but the Durango hasn’t received that love just yet. What it has received, however is the 392. That would be the 6.4-liter HEMI and here it’s cranking out 475 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

That transforms the Durango into a three-row SUV capable of blasting from 0-60 miles per hour in just 4.9 seconds. You can rip through the quarter mile in about 12.9 seconds as well. It’s not cheap. It’s definitely loud.

It’s absolutely a hilarious hot-rod of a sport utility vehicle.
