Eric and Brad are around to discuss the various goings on in the world of motorsport. We have recaps of the 12 Hours of Bathurst, as well as a bit of Formula E. Eric has some stories from the Lemons Rally and the race at Barber, which sounded awesome. Then a bit of news from most of the series in the world. Good stuff.

Also, a hearty congratulations for Hurley Haywood on his coming out. We’ll discuss representation in motorsport a bit more next week when the full team is around to talk.

Thanks for listening!

The Cammed & Tubbed Podcast: Episode 248 – Your Outlook Makes Me Uncomfortable W/ Jonathon Klein

This week on the Cammed & Tubbed podcast, Cam and Brad are around talking cars with Jonathon Klein. He always seems to come on the show when his career changes dramatically, so tune in to hear what happened. After we hash out the 3D’s, Klein talks about his new gig, we dig into Patron Questions, which are incredible, as always. Brad saw a documentary, Cam got dragged on Facebook over his thoughts on Mercedes, and then we discuss pod racer sound effects. Brad recently drove the Infiniti QX50, and you can hear his review on this episode. It has crazy variable-displacement technology, which you can see in the video after the jump.

The DFL Show: Episode 89 – Choppy

This week it’s Brad, Patrick, and Joel talking about racing. We had a guest (I won’t name names and destroy reputations…) but some technical issues with their audio left us without a track, so I had to edit him completely out of the show, it chopped about 40 minutes off of the run time, as we’d originally recorded a 2 hour+ episode. We talked about Daytona, the new Netflix documentary on Scott Tucker and his money scam, a bit of rally news, a bit of Formula one news, this and that. We make our predictions for this weekend’s 12 Hours of Bathurst race, and Joel has a lot of Australia racing news.

The DFL Show: Episode 88 – Eight Porsches, One Cup

This week on the DFL Show, Eric and Stef are around to discuss MOTORSPORT! The season has officially begun, as the Dakar rally ends and we prepare for the start of the Daytona 24 this weekend, some WRC chatter. That’s basically the show, there’s a bit of Dakar recapping and then the dynamic duo make their predictions for the the IMSA season opener.

There’s a bit of F1 news, some IndyCar news (Alfa to Indy?), the Pikes Peak entry list has come out, so that’s a thing we’re already thinking about. Go listen, you’ll have a good time.

Cam and Brad are joined by Clutchkick host, Radwood organizer, and good friend Rick Deacon this week. Brad and Rick discuss Radwood prep for the March event in Sonoma and DWA Cars & Coffee. Cam has some news about his Porsche as well as some news about his work with BMWCCA, as well as an anecdote about “marking your territory.” The boys also discuss classic pickup trucks, inspired by articles published by both Brad and Cam this week.

The DFL Show: Episode 87 – I Want To Crash Into The Astrodome

This week on The DFL Show, Pat, Eric, and Brad discuss the week’s motorsport news. We spend a lot of time discussing the bad ass that was Dan Gurney, because he deserves it. One of the most influential racers of the century died, and of course we’re going to gush about him and his insanely good career. Is there a modern analogue to Dan?

You can expect to hear updates on Dakar, the Dubai 24 hour, Formula E, and Asian Le Mans races over the weekend. News from Formula 1, Indycar, Formula E, WEC, IMSA, and more. In lieu of listener questions, Eric wants to know what our five bucket list races are for this year (great answers, by the by). Jabroni. Then we’re out., It’s a long show, but you’ll probably enjoy it.

When Trucks Were Trucks

Your narrator grew up in rural Michigan, where livestock outnumber people tenfold, and every household has at least one truck. My family wasn’t particularly brand loyal, but our trucks were always made in the USA, and were always single-cab bench-seat rubber-floor-mat work truck specials. Our trucks, be they Ram, Silverado, or F-150, had an AM/FM radio, maybe a tape deck if you were lucky, a pair of tinny speakers in the doors, a trio of safety belts, and an American V8 engine powering the rear wheels. Even four-wheel-drive was too fancy for our old farm. These trucks were used and abused, hammering through the fields, hauling hay, sheep, firewood, etc., but they were a necessary part of our daily operation.

Volvo XC60 T8 TwinMotor: The Orphaned Review

While the Germans were busy crafting some unquantifiable they call dynamism, inventing new splintered market segments, and haphazardly penning new model nomenclature, their Gothenburg rivals, known for safety and reliability, were quietly reworking themselves as world leaders in luxury car design. For decades Volvo has been known as the staid also-ran, popular among middle-class granola types and college professors looking for more comfort than on offer from your average Subaru. The last generation XC60 has been the company’s most successful model, and they expect to further that trend with the new model, stating a goal of selling 30,000 units annually.

With Volvo’s stellar 90-series models already built on the modular “Scalable Product Architecture” (SPA) platform, it is easy to be confident that the 60-series models would be equally good. Volvo has smartly invested in small-displacement forced induction engines, and they’ve been proven winners in the full-sized segment. Crafting a scaled-down midsize version of the same platform with identical drivetrain offerings is a surefire way to build an immediate winner.

Remembering Motorsport Legend Dan Sexton Gurney For The Badass He Was

Bradley Brownell January 15, 2018 Hoonobituaries

NASCAR

If you’ve been following motorsport for any amount of time, there is no forgiveness for not knowing about Dan Gurney and his multitude contributions to the industry. Dan was a proponent of safety equipment (like full-face helmets for example), he pioneered aerodynamics with the ‘Gurney flap’, invented the idea of spraying Champagne on the podium (as he won Le Mans for Ford in 1967), provided Grand Prix victories for Porsche, Brabham, and his own All-American Racers, penned the famed White Paper that argued for a convergence of American open-wheel series, and most importantly, he’d drive the wheels off of anything people would let him. Across his career, Dan participated in British touring car races, Formula 1, Can Am, Trans Am, ChampCar/Indy, NASCAR, and much more. He was the first person with major victories in NASCAR, sports cars, and Formula 1, a feat only matched by Mario Andretti and Juan Pablo Montoya.

More than just a racer, Dan also contributed to the sport as a team owner and manufacturer. His team, AAR, was founded in conjunction with Carroll Shelby in 1964, and Dan maintained control of the company through 2011 when he passed it on to his son. In that time, he’d engineered the team to victories in Formula 1, Trans Am (partnered with Plymouth), USAC (including three Indianapolis 500s), and sports cars (partnered with Toyota across the 1980s).

Gurney died Sunday morning at 86 years old due to complications from pneumonia. Our thoughts are with his wife Evi and their sons Dan Jr, Justin, Alex, and Jimmy.

The Cammed & Tubbed Podcast: Episode 245 – Six Degrees Of MC3

On this week’s episode, we have recurring guest Manuel Carrillo III on the show to talk about his escapades. He was recently invited to attend the Golden Globes by Infiniti and we spend far too long discussing that evening. Manuel also recently drove up the west coast in a new Buick for the holidays. He even drove up to Reno to visit Brad, and they went to the National Automobile Museum and See See Motor Coffee Co. If you’re ever in Reno, be sure to hit both of those locales. Brad got some project car work done, and has made plans for Coastal Range Rally in the 912E. Check it out, you might like this episode if you can get past the Golden Globes discussion and the bickering.
