Last Call: Imprudently Handsome

Peter Tanshanomi October 10, 2018 Last Call 28 Comments

A 1956–59 BMW 507 is always an attractive automobile. Dress it in formal black and photograph it at speed, and now you’re just flaunting elegance unnecessarily.

Conversation Starter: What’s your vote for the best-looking roadster? Talk amongst yourselves.

    Intermeccanica Italia.

    • Batshitbox

      Or, you know, this.

      • Tiller188

I’m thinking along the same lines, but, do we have to use a production version for it to count…?

        • Tiller188

…come to think of it, especially considering how many kit cars are powered by some flavor of SBC anyway, I wonder how come nobody makes a replica Stingray roadster? If Race Car Replicas can do a replica of the one-of-one XJ13, I would think this would be do-able…

        • outback_ute

Body too large, or chassis too small?

  • Batshitbox

    Or that other American roadster…

  • Sjalabais

Just throwing this in as an attempt at handsome.

  • outback_ute

Not sure, maybe Austin Healey 100, Maserati 3500, Mercedes Pagoda SL or MGA

  • Zentropy

I can offer nothing that, to my eye, tops the 507.

Here’s a non-factory Daf Daffodil that looks pretty:

I nominate an underdog manufacturer who teamed up with a very good partner who assisted more than one manufacturer with their roadsters.

    • Gnomical

I also like the front image of the next generation of the same car, but I do not like the little fins at the back

You’re just doing your part. Much appreciated.

      Hadn’t seen this before, thanks

Auburn Speedster. Just look at it.

    • outback_ute

The original yes, but not one of the replicas!

  • Harry Callahan

    • Zentropy

I would agree, though I prefer the svelte lines of the 289.

  • May I present the handsomest roadster…
with the ugliest roadster ever produced…

    • Zentropy

The Daimler wasn’t alone in that category…

      • HuntRhymesWith

        Someone had to post it!

      • But the Sprite is so cute! I haven’t found the right one yet but I’m still looking. But the Daimler? At the time in England manufacturers were hiring Italian designers to spiff up their products but Daimler must have had a contest for children of employees to submit crayon drawings of what a sports car looks like and little Andrew won with his “catfish” car.

  • The Z8 is perhaps the best looking of the modern era.
