Microsoft announces Forza Horizon 4 and moves the series to the UK

Spencer Campbell June 11, 2018 All Things Hoon 19 Comments

Microsoft and Playground Games revealed Forza Horizon 4 during the Xbox E3 Briefing today.

The open world racing game will be set in Britain, taking the varied climate of the region into account with dynamic seasons. The game will progress through each season, altering not only the way each vehicle controls, but also presenting players with unique opportunities exclusive to each season. Showcased in the game’s reveal trailer, winter will introduce snowy conditions, freezing over lakes and unlocking new areas to traverse. The open world will allow players to create their own custom race routes, which Playground Games Creative Director Ralph Fulton said was one of the most-requested features from previous installments.

Forza Horizon 4 will also feature a shared world. Players in the same game will synchronously experience the same changes in time of day, weather, and seasons. Either teaming up or going solo, players will be able to take on the challenges of Forza Horizon 4’s ever-changing world, either racing with their friends cooperatively or competitively.

On Xbox One X, the game will run at 60 FPS in 4K with HDR support. Microsoft and Playground Games have yet to release any details about how the game will run on original Xbox One or Xbox One S consoles.

The game will feature over 450 cars from more than 100 manufacturers, though it’s unclear if that number includes the motorcycles and hovercrafts featured in the trailer. Cars will be customizable as in previous installments of the Forza Horizon series in addition to a new drift suspension upgrade system. Driver personalization, including clothing, accessories, and emotes, will also be available and players will also be able to own property, unlocking new items and gameplay perks.

The McLaren Senna, will make its North American debut on the E3 showroom floor on June 12th. Microsoft will also feature the car during a Mixer livestream on the same day at 11 a.m. PDT.

Forza Horizon 4 is set to launch for Xbox One systems and Windows 10 on October 2nd. The game will be available on the same day for Xbox Game Pass subscribers.

Stuff like that doesn’t come on PC, right? The scenery alone is pretty impressive, all the driving aside.

    • smokyburnout

it does now, just get used to seeing this unless you’ve invested in a bitcoin-mining-level video card

Hehe, reasonable warning. My most powerful PC is built with leftover parts and an old Radeon found on eBay. Not competitive.

        • Our (we had him first!) Bradley Brownell was criticized for posting wallpaper images with puny pixel numbers (like only 3x of my SLR) last week.

    • Bob Chinn

for the last few versions of forza if you buy digital you get copies of pc and xbox. I tend to play on pc cause it looks better if you have a decent pc than the original xbox one

    • crank_case

It does, but as Smokyburnout says, you can pick up an Xbox for less than a high end graphics card.

Not sure that I got the latest and greatest 4K version, but many pawn shops now have the early versions of the Xbox One for $150.

  • Zentropy

YES. FH3 is one of my guilty pleasures (along with Rocket League).

    • crank_case

It’s a lot more fun than the mess that was Forza Motorsport 7 in fairness…

      • Zentropy

FM7 is the only title from the series that our family hasn’t purchased. I always liked the FM titles, but my kids preferred the “less serious” play style of the Horizon ones. I like both, but hesitated on FM7 considering I was the only one really interested. What’s bad about it?

        • crank_case

I typed a response, but Disqus seems to block out long comments as spam, so tl:dr – very straightjacketed play options, dumb “homologation” forced onto single player mode, not easy to take cars out just to try them out. Get game pass to play the next Forza entry rather than buying it.

Given the setting, if Chris’s 825 shows up in a DLC pack, I might finally come up with an excuse to buy an x-Bone.

    • Zentropy

Likewise, if random Lucas electrical shorts can intermittently affect the cars, it would add to the realism.

      • Maymar

Is the Red Ring of Death still a thing, and if not, maybe just engineer that in?

      • P161911

No, but after 3 months in your garage cars will start to show rust.

    • You know, I might too!

Really wasn’t ready to see that when I scrolled down.

    • P161911

It will be in the same pack as this:

      and this:
      and this:
      or this:

    • For Redusernab, a car pack for Forza Motorsport 4 on XBox 360 would be in order. (Disclaimer: a complete coincidence that I have a license for FM4 on X360 and feel annoyed that the DLC listings are empty, despite I have the money now)

Bonus points for the hovercraft, but where is the double decker bus or at least the Bristol dealership?
