Redusernab Asks: What’s your Powerball-paid-for fantasy island car?

Jeff Glucker February 20, 2018 Redusernab Asks 30 Comments

I was just on vacation with my wife and daughter. We went to an island. I can’t afford to live there, but I can certainly day dream about what that might be like if I could. In this fantasy world, I’d need to vehicle to get around the island and I know exactly what that would be.

Basically, I’d roam my new island home in my Dodge Charger set atop a Pro2 (or maybe Pro4) trophy truck chassis. Inside, the cabin would be reworked so as to provide some minimal level of creature comfort but not too much. I’d be able to drive… anywhere, and I’d also still be able to say I was driving a muscle car (of sorts).

If you were to win the Powerball jackpot, what sort of fantasy island car would you drive? Yes, Fantasy Island car but I expect other answers besides a chopped up Plymouth Volare. Okay, some other answers… this is Redusernab, so that answer definitely still works here too.

An island, so there might be a few unpaved roads. Need something with lots of style, decent power and good ground clearance. Dusenburg SSJ!

  • Papa Van Twee

I assume there are paved roads… fun paved roads. All I want right now is this:

I owned one as a kid, and I loved it. But like anything I liked as a kid, I’m hoping it doesn’t disappoint like it has with other things (I’m looking at you, Buckaroo Bonsai!) But this thing has me actually thinking of playing the lottery, since I’ll need money to buy it, a place to put it, and probably money for the divorce.

  • Tamerlane’s Thoughts

That Ford RS200 that’s for sale on Bring A Trailer right now.

  • Leh Keen-built Safari 911 or the Kelly Moss Safari RS. I just thought Keen first, because I like the bright colors I’ve seen on them so far and the smaller push bar.

    • Somebody please safari-out my Countach Camper.

  • GTXcellent

If I’m living on an island with Powerball money – I’m not bothering with the ‘land’ in island
    I’ll take a Cobia 344 with triple 300s please

  • Sjalabais

I’m not sure I need something fast for the real offroad action, more something handy:

That real question is too hard to answer…for gravel roads and higher speeds, a beefed up Amazon would be nice. But, anything will do, for a while, with that Powerball-money. If it craps out, something else is allowed to take over.

      That thing is awesome

  • crank_case

Well, I mean, technically Ireland is an island right?..

  • SlowJoeCrow

If my island is big enough to be worth driving around on, I’d want a Lancia Stratos.

    • kogashiwa

Took the words right out of my mouth so here’s a pic.

  • onrails

Get out of my way, unwashed poors!

  • Batshitbox

Usually I answer these questions with Moon Rover, and that would still serve, but in this case… Island or no island when (that’s right, when) I hit the Powerball I’m building a Rally Fighter.

Jeff’s idea has a lot of merit, but race cars/trucks are finicky things, so while I would have one, it wouldn’t be my primary private island transit. I’m thinking more along the lines of a custom upfitted LMTV with all manner of accoutrements in the cargo area.

        Next logical step:

  • Fred

No car in particular, but a race car team. Probably sports cars. OK maybe a nice motor home to live in while on the circuit.

  • Fantasy island car?

    Seriously, I’m thinking Lancia Stratos

    • Sjalabais

I kind of consider the non-serious answer to be quite good. Cocktailholders in all corners.

    • Rudy™

I hope that thing has Corinthian Leather!

  • discontinuuity

IH Scout 80 converted to steam power, so I don’t need to import gasoline.

    Something like this Jeep:

    Or this Land Rover:

      • outback_ute

Yes, but there is a reason the world moved away from steam powered transport except for recreational use. I’d much rather have a big tank of diesel delivered once in a while for an old Land Cruiser, the boat and an emergency generator!

    • Fuhrman16

Or you could go for a wood gas car, that way you can keep the stock engine while still be free of petrol.

      • Sjalabais

This WW2 solution seems more doable, with Ghostbuster-looks as an added benefit.

  • njhoon

Because someone has to get you guys there I’ll go for the Munson 52 Utility.

  • Island? Amphicar!

  • tonyola

Mega Track. It’s 4WD and suitably over the top.

  • Zentropy

I have a long list of cars that most people care little for (or at least, don’t invest much money in), so I’d probably need to begin with a huge garage. I’d find good examples of each car on my list, resto-mod every one with more modern, reliable running gear, and drive them in rotation.
