Last Call: LA River Racers Edition

Los Angeles County has always been plum full of surreptitious places where you could get your drag on. One of those was the concrete canyon that is the LA River just south east of downtown. Paved for much of its length after the devastating floods of 1938, the viaduct is now more storm wash than actual river, but in the 1950s, it became the hot rodders dream, and one the cops’ biggest money makers.

Last Call indicates the end of Redusernab’s broadcast day.  It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.

    i was just in LA this weekend. i’ve never been there for more than a few days, but it’s a magical place where the weather is always pleasant and amazing cars are everywhere. i recently did the PCH drive up the coast, and the Bay Area is pretty damn fantastic too.

    every time i travel to California it grabs me like no other place i’ve visited. i should just move. LA is probably much less magical to live in than to travel to, but a coworker tells me living close to work helps cut a lot of the stress out of it, and i want so desperately to believe him.

      The number one drawback seems to be the traffic. Maybe these guys have the right idea – drive along the river!

      I think the number 1 thing to remember is that LA is a *big* place. Hence there will be parts of it that you’ll love, parts that you’ll hate, and lots of off-white stucco filling in the remaining areas. So pick an area to live that you love and make sure it’s near work, so you’ll avoid most of the traffic headaches.

    I finally got to change to summer tires yesterday, as we are blessed with what may cautiously be called “spring”. Oddly, the front right of my winter tires is down to just under 3mm thread. That’s a bit alarming – and it is 3-4mm less than on the three other tires. I rotate them, they had the same pressure, the thread wear was even and not skewed. How did that happen? Uneven power distribution? Do I do spirited left turns and relax when turning right? What has this tire seen that remains a mystery to the others? Two new tires are already ordered, which is the first time I don’t replace all four in one go.

    • I’d guess either bad alignment, or mounted against rotational​ direction. (They delivered three “Left” tires and one “right” once, so this has happened before…)

  • I am not a professional aligner, I would expect excessive toe-in to chew up both sides, too…
