Craigslist on the road: Atlanta Edition

malibu donk

Whenever I fly to a new city and I’m holed up in a hotel finishing some work, I often find myself eyeballing the local Craigslist to see what’s around. Today I’m in Atlanta, so I entered “donk” into the search bar. I expected plenty of results. I got them, but I didn’t expect to find something this relatively new.

. It rides high with a set of 32-inch wheels at each corner, and the tires look practically painted on. This thing is wonderful.

I know I shouldn’t like this thing… but I can’t help it. I’ll take nearly any donk over any stance nation machine every day of the week. This would be hilarious fun to cruise around in for a bit. It’s ridiculous. It’s insane. I can’t believe someone is asking nearly $20,000 for it(!!).

Still… I love it.

Edit: Helps when I upload the pic.

Forget the wheels — it’s the all-glass roof that makes this car.

  • Alcology

The stains are certainly included but is the car-seat?

  • CruisinTime

The term Clown Car comes to mind.

    • stigshift

      Perfect for the RNC!

      • CruisinTime

Perfect for Hillary, get her some cred in the hood.

        • njhoon

It wouldn’t survive the potholes here in Philly. But they did pave all around the Wells Fargo Center* where the DNC is going to be next week.

          * Also known locally as the Big Bank Building or my favorite The FU Center. Seriously, when First Union bought the naming rights an Exec actually came out and said that people wouldn’t call it that. In Philly. Where the Flyers Play.

Just a little clarification of this culture: These cars are to be driven to shows and BBQs, they are not actually…used? Also, without warning or photos to explain it, being alone in a hotel room and googling “donk” sort of raises a different picture in my mind…

Everybody is criticising like this is just some kind of fashion — whilst overlooking the simple advantages this setup brings in terms of lifecycle cost:
2x the usual wheel diameter gives 2x the circumference, which HALVES the wear on a set of tires!
I would expect this setup to be favoured by those with a very looooooong daily commute…

      • nanoop

Now hear me out: when you use two sets of wheels, you’ll wear them only by a FOURTH. As an exercise, the student may extrapolate.

        • Monkey10is

          Are you suggesting this approach?

    • They’re used for shows, BBQs, and endurance road racing, mostly.

      • Sjalabais

From the photo, it’s the RV of race cars.

    • jeepjeff

I see ’em on the interstates around the Bay Area doing 70mph
occasionally. I think they’ve largely gone out of style for street use,
though, as I haven’t seen one in a while.

    • njhoon

I see them on the road here in Philly. I did see one that the left front wheel broke off after hitting a pothole. The owner was sitting on the right rear bumper waiting for a tow truck, keeping it level. Curious but humorous sight.

      • Sjalabais

That would have been a perfect Last Call photo.

  • Greg Kachadurian

Hahahaha. Nice. We’re not all like this down here, I promise.

    *fingers crossed behind back*

  • Gregg Collins

Only dorks or doodas would put those wheels on a car.

  • stigshift

    Glucka Pleeaaase!….

  • Moparmann

Ridiculously HIDEOUS!! (IMO) But if that’s your thing, oh well!

  • jeepjeff

To all the naysayers, it’s a 2010 Chevy Malibu. It’s not a car I’m ever going to care about, nor is it something that would ever make a great track or racecar*. It’s not my thing, I don’t want a car like this, but they have presence on the road and the car has more style and zazz in this form than stock. I kind of put this in the same box as a full dress Harley. Not my thing, but cool in a way and some people really like ’em. And in this case, they didn’t ruin something that was going to be really valuable down the road.

    * Yes, possibly a future LeMons car. But really: hasn’t been ruined for that either…

  • CherokeeOwner

And everyone claims the new Jeep Cherokee can’t be fitted with a lift kit.

    Aftermarket, step up your game.

  • outback_ute

I wonder if this photo shows full steering lock?

    • Sjalabais

When parking the car becomes an evening-filling activity.
