Bonus Redusernab Asks- Which Supercharged V8 sounds the best?

Jason Connor October 14, 2015 Redusernab Asks 11 Comments

I recently attended the Motor Press Guild Track Day at Willow Springs International Raceway and I came across a dilemma. After driving many offerings from the OEM’s a lot of them sounded like fire and brimstone and others like silky smooth butter. While running lap after lap I simply couldn’t decide which one sounded the best?

Due to a memory card error one of my top contenders the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S is out of the running due to the fact I couldn’t capture any video or audio. That leaves the other three and fills the list quite nicely by calling them all supercharged.

First up is the 2016 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe AWD, a snarling British bruiser that pops and cracks it’s way to any enthusiasts heart.

Second is the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, paired with a thundering V8 and a screaming supercharger the Hellcat is one of the loudest and best sounding American cars.

Finally the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V, with the 6.2 liter supercharged LT4 V8 screaming at full song, this V-Series Caddy has firmly placed Cadillac as world performance contender.

Which of these thundering V8's is your favorite?

    I vote “yes”.

I went for the bleeting Brit, but it’s essentially a tossup between it and the Hellcat. The V Caddy is almost too…understated. Which is what I would expect from the Brit. I’m now thinking Cadillac needs to give up their ‘Merican card.

    The 2005 Ford GT.

I personally enjoy the sound of the Challenger since you can hear the supercharger the bestest, and I love me some blower whine. If you’re asking for the best sounding supercharged V8 of all time though, I’d have to go with the 2003-2004 Cobra, with the provision that it has a pulley or a Kenne Bell on it to give it that ridiculously awesome whine.

If I’m honest, and I know this is heresy, I’ve sort of grown tired of the F-Type’s exhaust. It feels too forced, too deliberate, too “I am a wild and crazy sports car making wild and crazy sports car noises,” and not enough natural byproduct of a sports car engine. I would still love an F-Type, of course.

So, of this trio, I’m going Hellcat. I’ve driven an AMG GT, and remember it not sounding terrible, but it didn’t leave the impression plenty of AMGs used to, so the Mopar would probably still get it even if the Benz was a choice.

I recently followed a Maserati coupe that just sounded glorious. If I had to pick a current favorite, that would be it.

      They make a nice noise.

Two stroke V8 anyone? Trabant on speed.

That sounds like the angriest weed wacker ever…

        Here’s a slightly larger (and lower RPM) two-stroke V8:
(and no, it lost the title of the “world’s largest diesel engine” decades ago)

      That is awesome.
