Craigslist: VW Karmann-Ghia Baja Race Car

Bradley Brownell August 13, 2015 All Things Hoon 7 Comments

I’m not sure what keeps attracting me to these VW Karmann Ghias, but I just love them. Especially when they are prepared for racing, and especially especially when they were raced in-period. This particular buggy was built for and run in the 1979 and 1980 Baja 1000 events. VW KGs always looked a bit sportier than their beetle counterparts, and somehow even more visually appealing than Porsche’s 356 (Blaspehmy, I know. I’m supposed to be the resident Parsh guy…). There’s just something oh-so-wrong and oh-so-right about this sporty aircooled. It looks like it spends its weekends getting all jacked up on Mountain Dew and kicking some ass out in the desert! I want it, nay, I need it in my life.

From the ad:

Rare 1964 VW Baja Karman Ghia Race Car – $10000 (Nevada City)

Well, I have decided to sell my 1964 Baja Karman Ghia. We just bought an old house in Nevada City and are going to need the extra funds soon to make it our own.
This rare beast was built in the late1970’s and still retains a ton of the period correct charm you would expect from a vintage race build. I was informed by the previous owner that a family friend built it for competition and ran it in the 1979 and 1981 Baja 1000. It still retains most of the original race equipment (roll cage, front and rear sub frames, under chassis skid plate, suspension etc) but has since had a more streetable motor installed (1,600 dual port) and new seats and harnesses within the last year. I bought this Baja Ghia because in all my years as an air cooled VW enthusiast, I have never seen another one. It is a great grocery getter/show car and receives a LOT of looks and smiles wherever it goes.
Here are some of the new items installed on the car within the last 2 years. . .
New Seats/harnesses, tail light lenses, roll bar padding, KC Highlight front auxiliary headlamps, Windshield, front and rear windshield rubber, fire extinguisher, complete brake system (hoses, shoes, master and slave cylinders), fuel pump, bowden tube, shift bushings, electric choke mechanism, fuel lines, synthetic oil change, Interior and exterior (matte Huggar Orange) paint.
This Ghia just won 1st place in the off road division at a the prestigious Bugorama car show in Sacramento CA. This relic has lived it’s entire life in CA and is 100% rust free.
Please feel free to call [redacted] to set up an appointment to view. I am excepting offers over 10K. Thanks for looking!

Seriously so cool. What would you do with such a car if it were yours? It’s neat, but is it ten grand neat?

Small world. I fawned over this ad yesterday.

  • acarr260

I’m glad this is in Cali and I’m in the Midwest. Otherwise, I would have a lot of explaining to do when my wife found this in the garage.

    “But… but… but… honey… it has a racing provenance!”

  • smalleyxb122

I don’t see ten grand there, and that’s the seller’s bass-ackward starting point for negotiation.

…unless he really does mean “…excepting offers over $10k,” meaning that offers over $10k will be ignored.

    • longrooffan

      Nice catch.

    • nanoop

The access of money will be late aside.

    • Sjalabais

      The New Modesty.

  • Probably takes all 60 horsepower just to turn those two gumbo mudders. Ditch ’em for a set of 31-33″ BFG ATs or Goodyear Duratracs and you’d have a much better time.
