Here we are on the last weekend of July, and in celebration of the Live Postings Eric is doing for the 24 Hours of LeMons’ Doing Time in Joliet Crapcan race, I thought I would continue with highlighting some Tow Rigs you may want to use to haul your team’s prize winning “Race Car” to and (not always) from the track. And look what I found… I can only describe it as probably the single greatest K20 Diesel Suburban in existence, and you can own it…

Suburbans are the go to vehicle (or at least they used to be) if you were towing a Travel Trailer (think Airstream), a Horse Trailer (with a couple of prized Thoroughbreds), or haul around a race car. Those functions have been passed on to other forms of transportation (Either a Loaded Pickup, or a Hauling Service). Well, here is an Old School Truck that would be perfect to haul around your Ass (Think Jack Ass or Mule), or your clapped out $500 finely tuned racing heap.

PURCHASED NEW ON FEBRUARY 21, 1985 AT APPLEWAY CHEVROLET IN SPOKANE WASHINGTON. THIS WONDERFUL SUBURBAN HAS BEEN
OWNED BY ONE METICULOUS OWNER SINCE 1985. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN GARAGED AND PAMPERED SINCE NEW. THE OWNER WOULD NOT EVEN CLOSE THE DOORS COMPLETELY BECAUSE HE DID NOT WANT TO PINCH THE DOOR RUBBERS. THE OWNER PASSED AWAY AND THE VEHICLE IS BEING SOLD TO SETTLE ESTATE.

There is a lot more to the listing, but you get the idea. There are 150 images with this ad, so you can see everything. This is a true time capsule, and the bidding is everything. With over two days to go, it has only reached $10,000, which is a bargain in anyone’s book. My only problem with this truck is that it might be too good to haul your Crapcan to and from the track… Take a look at the listing, and tell me what you could do with this thing…

Carrying a spare radiator just in case?

    That's preparedness!

Not even Lancia Gamma owners do that.

  • CherokeeOwner

    So shiny… so clean… *drooooooool*

If people are going to lie about miles, they should replace the rubber pad on the brake pedal.

Man that's one clean burban. For me it would be so much better if it where 2wd.
Mine was an 84 2wd blue over grey two tone. When I bought it it had the same bug deflector and bush guard they where the first improvements I made when I removed them. The 6.2 had more than 700k km on it when it was stolen. Or I would still have it.

My grandfather has one of these trucks, a 1984 gmc 2500 6.2 diesel. The odometer died years ago at around 230,000 miles and it starts every time. It is an amazing truck and sounds awesome. Whoever buys this is very lucky.

Bidding is over $14K now. For less money, I think I'd go with this Yukon XL 2500 Quadrasteer instead.

He's asking bonkers money for that one though. I couldn't get any bites on mine which was listed on eBay for the past month at $8K with nothing but a couple throwaway offers of 3 grand.

I bought a rusted out '85 one ton 4×2 with the 6.2 to haul some supplies and gravel whilst finishing the remodeling. The rest of the truck was gone, but what a motor! So much better than the 6.5 turbos my employer keeps lying around (they rarely run). Who knows how many miles, but she certainly had rolled the OD a few times. Of course, as my need for the truck was dwindling, I became unsatisfied with the level of power and started to turn her up.

The measure of performance was the run from the gravel pit – how fast she was at the top of the hill a mile away, carrying one ton in the bed and 2 tons in the single axle trailer. Benchmark was 45 mph. Turned her up a little each run, and suddenly hit the sweet spot, pulling 70 mph with ease, spewing coal like the powerstroke boys. When I got home, there was raw diesel on the trailer. Oops, better turn her back a hair…

A Sub has been my go-to vehicle for 20 years. These days I have options from luxury sedans to hopped up current Stang to F350. When it it time to travel big (wedding in SD this weekend), nothing else to consider but our current Denali. I cry about the replacement cost.

My first sub was a '91–I'd love this diesel.

  • What's with the twin CB antennas at the very front of the truck? I don't even mind the antennas themselves. I ran ones like that back in the 70's when CB first became popular, but even back then I ran them on the roof because they were higher, and it made more sense if you knew anything at all about radio propagation and proper antenna mounting (the car itself becomes part of the ground plane). Where he has those mounted is just plain silly. I won't even go into how they should be 8' apart to have any improvements over a single whip. I learned that part when I became an amateur (ham) radio operator. I have to wonder what other silly improvements he's made if he can't get that right?

    • NotJustDucky

At first glance I assumed they were clearance rods for towing a tall trailer or something.

      • It says right in the copy… "HAS THE OLD SCHOOL CB SYSTEM IN PLACE WITH DUAL ANTENNAS." They look to be half-wave 11 meter (CB band) antennas.

        • NotJustDucky

Yeah, I saw that, but that was after I'd taken a cursory glance at the lead photo, and with the twin whips mounted to the brush guard up front, my first thought wasn't 'CB antenna', because that's not exactly a common setup (as you pointed out, for good reason).
