2014 Bentley Continental GT V8 S: The classiest hot rod on the bright yellow block

bentley

It wants to stand out…

From the color, to the noise, the 2014 Bentley Continental GT V8 S is a high-dollar luxury droptop that looks to make its presence known. It’s the noise that has me most interested, of course, as the color is not my cup of delightful British tea. The noise is produced by the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine mounted under the hood. It generates 521 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque.

That’s enough to make the 0-60 run in just over four seconds. It’s also enough to propel this not-so-light on its feet brawler on to its top speed of 191 miles per hour.

Did I say “stand out”? I meant blast out…

[Disclaimer: Bentley flipped us the keys to the new Continental GT V8 S and included a tank of gas. I included a far lower tax bracket than this car is used to shuttling around.]

    Sorry, but P.M.Yellow is absolutely the wrong color for a Bentley, no matter how well it performs. You can draw enough attention in other colors without the visual equivalent of screaming that yellow provides. Leave it for the Lambos.

    • FЯeeMan

      They could have gone with neon orange or lime green…

      • tonyola

        I suppose there will always be rich extroverts who need the attention. However, I saw a new Bentley convertible yesterday that was white with dark blue top and interior. Really elegant looking without being too low-key.

        I appreciate the way you're thinking, but I'd have to agree with tonyola. The colour says more about today's Bentley customers than about the brand's proud history. A Nissan 'vert might be yellow and feel appropriately dressed…a Bentley? Not so much.

        Hmmm, perhaps…

        • In each case the mismatched partial respray sends precisely the right message.

        • FЯeeMan

          Precisely!

        • Sjalabais

          Hmmm…orange. There is something about that colour that gives a tad more accept, imho. If you still have the file lying around, do a brown one and one in BRG just for the eye-cleansing effect, please. Maybe decently sized wheels, too.

          • Scandinavian Flick ★

            I kinda suck at the color change thing, so this is as close as I could get to BRG. Brown wasn't in the cards… 🙁
            I also gave it Watanabes. Because reasons.

            • Sjalabais

              I'd still call that an improvement. Cool!

    Let's face it: a Continental GT from 1993 or the previous old-ass model would look ridick in this color (even today) but somehow we've become desensetized to obnoxious colors that would make Walter Owen Bentley spin in his grave at somewhere north of 5,000 rpm.

    People make fun of the late 80s for obscene cars, but I think that's been topped LONG ago, even though the design of this version is towards the conservative side. Personally, I blame the RR Phantom.

    • Marto

      NOT the colour I would choose.

      But not as bad as I thought it would look:

    Dat yellow gets Jeff all worked up…

    <img src="; width="500">

    Jeeze, Jeff, this is a family site!

    • We have seen this before on REDACTED, after this all went down. Soon we will have Burberry Banhammers over here.

    • Preludacris

      I'm with this guy ^
      Leave that on [REDACTED] please…

      • Scandinavian Flick ★

        It was low hanging fruit… If you have any other suggestions, I still have the files open in PS for the rest of the work day. I'll entertain any ideas of how we can make Jeff look ridiculous.

        • Preludacris

          I dunno. I'm not watching the video til after work, anyways. Your stuff is usually great though.

          • Scandinavian Flick ★

            I'm not feeling particularly creative today, (shitty morning too…) but I didn't want to disappoint, given the obvious setup. I guess this is one of those situations where the greater disappointment was in doing anything at all…

    Reviewing a Bentley while wearing jeans and sneakers….? Perhaps that is consistent with where Bentley sees its market—the younger faux-hipster crowd who worships at the altar of irony?

    • I am not younger!

      Come to think of it, I'm also not in the market for a new Bentley, so maybe you're right.

      • Van_Sarockin

        But looking at all this is making me feel quite juvenile. So, there's that.

    • Alcology

      He was classing that gigantic POS up with the sneaks and jeans.

  • Van_Sarockin

    Once upon a time, Bentley's were locomotives. Trying to make them into cafe racers isn't a step forward.

  • Rover1

    I think I'll have Dark Sapphire paint with Imperial Blue leather and blue hood on my Bentley
    <img src=";
    <img src=";
    or…..,no I'll have Verdant paint with Saffron and Porpoise leather
    <img src=";
    <img src=";
    Or…? Good advice. Don't go on the Bentley configurator unless you've got lots of time <a href="” target=”_blank”>.

    • Vairship

      Wait… they use Porpoise leather? The outrage!
