Get Well Soon, Jim

Tim Odell February 2, 2013 All Things Hoon, Announcements 81 Comments

Jim BrennanJim “UDMan” Brennan, our Weekend Editor and Classic Captions guy, is on temporary medical leave. He had a stroke this past week, and will be spending the next roughly six months working in regaining use of the right side of his body. We didn’t hear this from a relative, social media or through the grapevine; in characteristically determined form, he emailed us himself with the news.

Jim’s been with us since the start, his most recent post being his 1422nd (more that triple my post count, actually). We’ll have some new and regular staff filling in for him on the weekends, but no one’s replacing Jim, that’s for sure.

If you feel so inclined, feel free to drop him a kind word in the comments.

  • Jim I,

    Be strong.

    Jim II

  • Get well soon Jim!

  • Crikey, Jim;

God speed, Man, and us of the Hoonitariat from this side of the pond wish you a speedy recovery. We need you back at the keyboard, Stat, lest there be nothing for us to salivate over on the internet at weekends. All the best mate.

  • Remdog

    Jim,

I never had much of a thing for American classics(aka barges), and I still don't, but I love reading about them in the weekend edition.

    Keep it up.

  • Wishing you a prompt and speedy recovery Jim. Remember Jim, UDMan.

    • I just clumsily thumbs-downed that because of my stupid phone keyboard. I didn't mean to, because it was awesome and worth infinite upthumbing.

  • T.W.

    Jim;

I was schlepping through a pick a part in Cumblerland RI today, and saw a UD flatbed poking it's nose out of the building, and thought to myself, I'll bet Jim had his hands on that truck at one point or another. Get well soon, buddy, so you can continue to delight us!

    Tim

  • EnsignSlow

I just want to tell you good luck, we're all counting on you. You'll be in my thoughts, and I wish you a speedy recovery. I just want to tell you good luck, we're all counting on you.

  • Devin

Since I know a surprising number of people who had strokes recently, I know the next six months won't be very easy. But from them I've also learned that a combination of determination and good people around you can make things go better than anyone expects. So, Jim, it's a good thing you've got both of those.

  • Get well soon!

  • PFG

Here's to a full and speedy recovery, Jim. U are indeed D Man.

  • domino_vitali

    Hello Jim,

I hope you are feeling much better soon! I wish you a fast recovery! 🙂

  • Best wishes for your full recovery, Jim! I look forward to your next contribution to the 'verse.

  • redaztec

Hope your recovery is fast and complete!

  • We're pulling for you, Jim. Hang tough, work hard and know that you're loved.

  • junkman

Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery, Jim. We look forward to your return!

  • Wow Jim, sorry to hear this. Wishing you all the best for a fast and thorough recovery!

  • racer139

Get well soon.. I hope the restoration is through and complete..

  • $kaycog

I've been wondering about you, Jim. I've really missed you. I'll pray for you and your family.

  • B72

Sorry to hear it. Consider some Corvair therapy. And get well soon!

  • Jim,

I am sorry to hear this! I hope and pray you have a speedy recovery. When you do get better you should come out to Detroit and we'll debate whether the BMW we just walked by was a V8 or V12.

In the mean time, if you need anything don't hesitate to ask.

  • BGW

Man, I hate hearing this. Take care and get well soon, sir!

  • Vavon

<img src="; width="650/"> Sorry Jim, but I couldn't find anything with Vintage American Metal, so this will have to do.

  • Yikes. I think I speak for all of us when I say I'm glad it wasn't worse than it sounds like it was. Get lots of rest and get well soon, Jim!

  • Sam Pieter

    Get well soon!

  • dukeisduke

    Jim, you're in my prayers.

  • dukeisduke

Jim, I also hope that you don't have another one any time soon, and that your health is good. Keep us posted on how things are going, or reach out to someone here who can keep us in touch with you.

  • wisc47

Wish you a speedy recovery, Jim.

  • Felis_Concolor

Please recover quickly and fully; my best wishes go to you and yours.

  • bigbluefl

Get well soon, Good Sir, get well soon.

  • vwminispeedster

Get well soon. Every time I see a UD I'll be thinking of you.

  • calgoat

Best wishes on a speedy and complete recovery, sir.

  • Jay_Ramey

Jim, we're all pulling for you, hope your recover quickly!

  • Eggwich James Dio

Damn, scary stuff. I hope you are okay Jim. I know you'll do everything you've gotta do to get better, but that doesn't make it any shorter or easier of a process. Know that you have a few hundred (at least) friends here on Redusernab, and if there's anything you need, make it known in some way. Don't make it harder than it already is. You've earned support from this community. A friend of mine has been going through treatment for brain cancer, and while he has insurance, it still cost a heckuva lot of money to get him driven to and from appointments. So if there's anything you need, please don't be too proud to ask. We would be honored to help.

  • SSurfer321

Jim, we're all saddened to hear this news. Here's to what we all hope to be a speedy and full recovery.

  • Van_Sarockin

The Jim I know is the guy who decided to make a crappy old piece of lawn art into a race car. His Corvair won the Index of Effluency on it and Jim's first time out. I'm pretty sure you won't be letting a little physical inconvenience hold you back long. A good friend of mine almost died from a cerebral haemorrhage that left her completely paralyzed on one side. She got involved in her treatment and now lives independently and productively. And she runs marathons, when she was told she'd never walk. Life is a lot different now, but she's fully engaged and doing what she wants, on her own terms. Jim, you've got a lot of friends rooting for you and ready to help. You've got a lot more laps to go before your stint is done.

  • JayP2112

When you get back to a full recovery and someone says, "Man, my allergies are really bad!" or "I pulled my back doing laundry" you can laugh at such un-hoonness.

    Well wishes headed your way.

  • Mad_Hungarian

Hey Jim, best wishes and prayers for a quick recovery. You are an inspiration. If you can race a '63 Corvair, and we know you can and did, you can tackle this!

  • Jim, get well soon. I look forward to your return, but take as much time as you need.

  • mr. mzs zsm msz esq

It will be hard road, but U D Man.

  • Rover1

I see other people have made the UDman joke, but its true, UR! God speed a healthy recovery, all the hooniverse's prayers and thoughts are with you, one of our best and most loquacious commentators. Get well and get writing soon!

  • BlackIce_GTS

    Jim,
The determination to send a personal email to inform the car loonies you volunteer for on the weekend that something severe and awful has happened to your brain shows you have the strength of mind to get through this. All I can do is wish you luck.

  • OA5599

It's a major setback, but if you're already back at the keyboard, you're on your way to a comeback. I hope your recovery is even speedier than your race car–LOTS speedier.

  • Hopman

Jim, may you recover faster than the Flash, and be back stronger than Superman!

Just rember: The New England LEmons races are in May and October!

  • Be strong and HOON on! We're all with you brother.

  • fodder650

The odd thing is that I think of you on every commute. I have a UD dealer (I'm guessing for not much longer) here in Womelsdorf Pennsylvania. I never understood why a town of 2500 has one of those dealers but its there and I only noticed it because of your name.

    Get well soon.

  • smalleyxb122

Wishing you the best toward a speedy recovery, Jim. We'll miss you during your hiatus. Hurry back!

  • skitter

Jim, I can't think of anything to add that hasn't already been said. If you want anything, we want to send it. If you need something done, we want to help take care of it. In the meantime, don't push yourself too hard, you don't have to run full bore, but don't ever stop trying. You're going to get through this, and we'll eagerly await your return.

  • Number_Six

Jim, you've made a lot of friends here and we're all going to selfishly miss you and your sensible-but-really-not-sensible-at-all posts while you recover. Please get well soon and know a lot of people are thinking of you during this very difficult time.

  • scroggzilla

Dammit Jim, you're a blooger, not a patient! Get well soon!

  • Praying for your recovery to be rapid and complete, Jim

  • Get well soon, and by "well" I mean fully recovered with no sequences at all.

  • Mark

Get well soon, sir, we need your fusalage posts!

  • fede6882

My gosh, Jim…here's wishing you a speedy recovery. Y'know, most of what I learned to appreciate and love about Big Old American Iron I've picked up from your posts, and I haven't had nearly enough yet. So get well soon!

  • The Professor

Good luck and best wishes to you Jim. You're just a young punk so you should heal up pretty quickly. Rub the butts on the cute nurses whenever you can, for physical therapy of course, and you'll be better in no time!

  • Tom Lee

God speed and a quick recovery.
    horsefarmer

  • BAMacPherson

Best of luck on the road to recovery Jim. I sincerely hope that before too long you'll be back in the driver's seat, and that you aren't condemned to a life of slushboxes.

  • jeepjeff

Jim, I'm going to miss your posts every week. Take all the time you need to heal, but may your recovery be swift. I'm glad you were able to tell Tim directly. U R D Man.

  • dr zero

Dear Jim, I hope that you have a quick and full recovery. I've had quite a few family members have strokes, some have recovered well, and others haven't. My thoughts are with you.

  • MVEilenstein

Looking forward to seeing your posts again, Jim. Best wishes for a quick recovery.

  • Jim, Weekend Editions, the caption contest and various show-downs won't be the same without you. Please, please get well soon! The whole of the munity is rooting for you.

  • topdeadcentre

I agree with everyone here…. May your recovery be swift and complete, Jim!!

  • Best wishes, Jim. Your racing and your writing set high standards indeed, so here's to seeing you back at it.

  • Scandinavian Flick

I always enjoy reading through the weekend posts to help me through the Monday blues, so as habit has it, I came to this post late as well. I hope the well wishes here give you strength and help you through this, just as your posts have helped me through many Mondays. There certainly is no question that you are a valued member of this awesome online community!

Best of luck, Jim! I hope for a speedy recovery for you!

  • FuzzyPlushroom

Any man brave enough to put a pre-Nader Corvair on a race track is strong enough to get through this. You'll be in my thoughts.

  • wunno sev

oh no! well, he's well enough to email after just a few days, hopefully he'll be up and running in no time

    gws!

  • citroen67

Wow! I'm a little late to the game, and my jaw about hit the floor when I read this!

Jim, sorry to hear this! I wish you a speedy recovery. Have faith, brother, you will get through this. My mother had a series of small strokes last year, and she lost 20% of her left side field of vision, and she was seeing blank spots, lines and experiencing darkened vision. The doc said that she would have this as a permanent result of the strokes. She retired from her job and was going to surrender her own license and quit driving all together. Fast forward to December, and she(and her doc) decided that she was well enough to go back to work full time! Turns out the damage that was done by the strokes had repaired itself over time, and everything wrong with her vision had gone away(with exception of the 20% loss of peripheral, sadly, that is gone for good). Life for her is almost completely back to normal now.

I guess my point is to not give up and stay strong, my friend! The human body is an amazing machine, and it will find a way to adapt!

Get well soon, my good sir! You have a pretty sizable support structure on here, and we are all pulling for you!

  • Target29

Best wishes for a speedy recovery Jim!

  • pj134

    Get better soon Jim.

  • Dean Bigglesworth

    Shit… shit, shit shit.
I had a bit of an accident in 2002 and spent half a year in hospital, hope you fare better and make a full recovery. Someone bought me the Century Child album from Nightwish when I was in the hospital, I listened to it quite a bit. I raise my glass(of jameson, the hospital cognac is no good) to you and here's a song from that album.
