Auction Action: 2011 Chevrolet Caprice Police-spec

Kamil Kaluski May 22, 2012 All Things Hoon 24 Comments

Want a Pontiac G8 but can’t find a decent one? Can’t wait for the new Holden Commodore to get here? If you live close to Connecticut and you have a dealer license, I have some great news.

Sort of.

Southern Auto Action is a rather large independent dealer auction house. It receives cars from all over the tri-state area as well as  from New England and as far south as Philly. Cars are sold by manufacturers, rental companies, dealers, and similar, but only to other registered dealers.

Different sellers arrive on different weeks, whenever they have a certain amount of cars to they need to move. This week, General Motors will be auctioning off a handful of its cars, and that’s where I found the gem seen above. Auctions are held on Wednesdays and sales are posted before the end of the week. This got me thinking…

This white 2011 Caprice is sold being auctioned off by General Motors. No history was provided: could have been a test vehicle, a sample vehicle, auto show vehicle, it could have been on a loan or a lease, or perhaps a show car GM took to different police departments for demonstration. No one knows for sure. It has been “in service” since 09/15/2011, and with only 10,000 miles on the clock, how much abuse could it have taken?

Looks like some minor damage on the roof from a light bar, possibly?

I am very curious how much this vehicle is going to sell for. Unfortunately one of the notes says that this vehicle, even at this auction, can only be sold to Chevy dealers. That is probably because it is being sold directly by GM, and they cannot sell it to anyone else. Regardless, let’s say you’re Chevy dealer and you have  the option of buying this car.

On one side, it’s very unique and in very low supply, and never for sale to privateers. On the other, while under warranty, it’s a car with an unknown past. It is also a vehicle with a very limited target audience; Jack and Jill won’t buy this as a family vehicle, just like Slick Rick won’t replace his ’02 A6 with it. There are people out there who would be willing to buy this very car, but where do you find them, and how much would they be willing to pay for it?

Let’s pretend you’re a Chevy dealer and you:

  1. How much do you pay for it?
  2. How/where do you resell it?
  3. How do you advertise it?
  4. Let’s just add the fact that unless you make $1500-$3000 on this car, it isn’t worth your time.

  • I always considered Slick Rick to be more of a Cadillac or maybe classic Buick guy.
    <img src=";

Also: much want. So much want.

    • acarr260

Judging from that picture, I would guess that he would like something understated, yet elegant… maybe with a custom "LADIDADI" license plate.

    • Impalamino

      "Halt! Who goes there?"

"It is I sir, Richard of Nottingham!"

"Well speak up man, what is it?"

"News from the East, sire! Rick the Ruler has returned!"

  • themagicboltbox

For reference, a local Buick dealer is offering a black one with 595 miles for $29k (with the spotlight still attached!): …

  • OA5599

    * POLICE CAR * JET BLACK
That's quite a pale shade of Jet Black, and the open door shots don't show any evidence of a color change.

    * MODEL CONVERSION * FREQUENCIES RATING 315 MHZ, LONG DISTANCE
Is that some sort of police car specification, to show what approved communication frequencies the computer is shielded from?

    • No idea, I just copied and pasted.

  • acarr260

With the exception of the spotlight, that should be quite the sleeper.

  • failboat

I kind of hate how the back looks waaaay too similar to an Impala. On paper the car sounds awesome but it just looks bland as hell. Hopefully the new SS looks a lot better.

    • Me too. In fact I double checked to make sure it wasn't an Impala.
I think it was the idea to make it bland.

      • C³-Cool Cadillac Cat

They succeeded, and in a good way.

        I don't want flash…at all.

    • My local sheriff's department has both Impalas and the new Caprices (among about 10 different vehicles). It can by VERY hard to tell them apart. Especially with identical paint jobs.

I'd rather get a detective car in a few years. They have a few more options, come in different colors, and probably don't see the daily abuse a patrol car would.

    • RegalRegalia

You forgot to mention how much harder it will be to adjust to a new copdar paradigm.

  • Mr.Cranky

    Wow.

    Nah.

Would take an updated Panther police interceptor over this.

    • RegalRegalia

I agree. I'd rather have a car that is not a chevy (besides this being an exclusive pig-mobile I'm a Buick-driving Ford man), at least the Vic got fleet use outside of busting people and going for donuts.
/someone angrily reply with "my dad's a cop", that'd be too awesome.

  • PotbellyJoe

There are 4 for sale on eBay right now. One with 687 miles on the odo.

I would get one, but my concern is insurance. (Also, no manual transmission.)

  • Number_Six

This is an interesting feature: HANDLING CHARGE ELIZABETH ASM TO KERR INDUSTRIES, BENICIA PORT, CA

    • OA5599

Kerr Industries takes the basic car and adds or swaps the special equipment to transform it into a cop car. The handling charge covers the trip from Elizabeth to Benicia.

  • Van_Sarockin

Hey, it's got a cop motor, cop tires, cop shock and a cop differential. We're on a mission from God.

  • RichardKopf

A few dealerships by me are selling them to the public.

    • dukeisduke

So much for GM's plan to keep them out of the public's hands. All you'd need is a nice set of alloy wheels, and matching cloth for the backseat (or skip both), and you're good to go. Imagine how nervous other drivers will become when they see one of these in their rearview mirror?

      • Unfortunately they look about like an Impala in the rear view mirror.

The back seat looks perfect for kids. Easy to hose out for kids or convicts. I might go with different wheels or just ditch the dog dishes for an all black steel wheel or paint these silver like the ones on my truck.

      • I can't think of anything much cooler than a set of 18" steels right now.

Problem is that car would tempt me to drive everywhere in a pair of aviators and an officious looking outfit, racing up behind people and shitting them up a bit, then dropping back again.

  • RegalRegalia

    Sideports? WHY?!!!!

  • AZIZ

I'm from the Middle East (Saudi Arabia)

And this vehicle existed since the year 2000

Price is now 155 000 SR
= We $ 41,000 to the highest Option

And the start of almost 100,000 riyals = almost $ 26000

It's stupid car because it is an Australian-made, but its engine is very powerful

And quality is very low and many problems
