Holden to your hats (I’m so sorry…): The Commodore is coming!

Jeff Glucker May 17, 2012 All Things Hoon 57 Comments

We’ve heard a bit o’ exciting news this morning that comes courtesy of our friends down under. General Motor’s Australian arm Holden is getting ready to bring the Commodore to the United States. Not only is the full-size rear-driver heading here, but it’s being reported that a few other body styles will follow suit not longer after the Commodore. First to make the trek though is the large four door, which will arrive stateside with Chevrolet badges, and it will be called the SS.

Initially, the Chevrolet SS will make its debut on the left-turn loving tracks of NASCAR. That should occur in 2013, and then the public will get their turn behind the wheel sometime in 2014. If this sounds awesome, you better have your money ready. General Motors says that the amount arriving in dealerships will be fewer than the 50,000-odd Pontiac G8 sedans that were sold during that vehicles production run.

No word yet on what the other body styles might be. If we could suggest something… offer either a wagon or a ute, we don’t care which because both sound awesome. The wagon will sell better, and the ute will be crazier, but both will be welcomed with open arms by all here in the Redusernab.

  • I guess it was a bad idea for me to have hoarded thirty (30) low mileage Pontiac G8 GTs?

  • You guys hear that? It is the sound of lightly abused Pontiac G8 GXPs plummeting. Hopefully that is what that sound is. The A/C at work has been on the fritz.

    • PowerTryp

I'm hearing the sound of one hand clapping and trees falling in the forest with no one around.

  • Marcal

I have to laugh at the name – SS. What do you call the performance edition?

    • Kogashiwa

      SS Type R

    • SSS

      • quattrovalvole

        sss? hmmm….

        <img src="; />

    • Mugen/TRD Power.

    • Scandinavian Flick

      "SS Performance Edition"

      • Marcal

        I had to ask.

        • Scandinavian Flick

Occam's razor. It is Chevy after all. 😉

    • PowerTryp

I nominate SS-SS. Well that or SS Gran sport.

      • SS Super Sport

    • Number_Six

      Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler

      • Raze1138

What do you think this is, a Volkswagen?

    • TurboBrick

      SS Essess?

    • 4G

    • pj134

Maybe we will venture back to package code/engine name for the performance versions. Like where ZL-1, Z28 and ZR-1 got their start.

    • No historical references there at all.

    • AlexiusG55

It's sold as a Vauxhall VXR8 in Britain- VXR is what Vauxhall call the performance versions of their other models.

  • JayP2112

    Rockin' the ElCamino!
This is good news. More V8 sedans the better. Make it available with an unethical manual.

  • Van_Sarockin

So far, that's some really ute-less information.

    • Marcal

It's still early days. Don't go wagon your finger just yet.

      • Van_Sarockin

I'll wag what I want. The ute of today don't have the balls to do donuts on my lawn.

        • Of course not, that's what bitchin' Camaro's are for.

  • Savant_Idiot

    I'm not Holden my breath…

    • Hopman

      ::::INSERT RIMSHOT HERE:::::::::::

      • Savant_Idiot

Yep, GM has been Holden out on us for too long…

        • Scandinavian Flick

You're not Holden back with the puns.

I guess you might as well make ute of them while you can.

  • Smells_Homeless

If they bring the Maloo over, and don't make it 50K, my ire with GM over the loss of Pontiac may finally subside enough that I don't spit every time I see a Buick.

    • pj134

GM sacrifices all brands for the glory of Chevy. Leave Buick out of it, it's all Chevy's fault.

      • Smells_Homeless

        No promises, but I'll try.

        • pj134

I'm just saying, you're hating one guy because his brother is a spoiled douche beloved by people who find left turns an intellectual pursuit.

I wonder if they'll update the exterior or just use the same that works in Africa.

Detroit Iron from Down Under. It's like hiring a bunch of wannabes to torture classic rock. Holden to the feeling.

What in Saint's supper was that? Nevermind, I don't want to know, it was awful.

There was this one as well, better response maybe, but lacked the awesome sidtar solo. Did you notice the mouse pointer on the previous one though, I just did, whoa…

    • Scandinavian Flick

What in the name of Charles Darwin was that??? I feel like I've been aurally raped by a chainsaw wielding mongoose wearing a sweater vest…

    You should've come on
Knowing how you made me feel
    And I should've just gone
    After a G8 for a steal
    Oh I must've been a dreamer
And you were bought by someone else
    But now your comin' over

    Oh Chevy, our love for
    Holdens, Holdens
    Oh Chevy, our love for
    Holdens, Holdens

    • Welcome back man, we missed you.

  • Caballero!

    • Sprint SP!

  • So are these actually Comodores or just civilian Caprices? If I was going to make the plunge to get a 4-door car, might as well get one with a back seat. I think I would actually prefer a longer Caprice to the Commodore. Just make sure it has a 400+HP V-8. Maybe I can afford one in 15 years.

  • smalleyxb122

They could have done better with the name, but everything else about this announcement is great news! I'm not holding my breath for the Ute or the Wagon, but either would be excellent. (both would be better) I doubt the Ute would have sufficient towing capacity to replace my truck, but the wagon, or, to a lesser extent, the sedan would make a nice addition to my "fleet."

One thing, though. I will not buy any of them with an automatic. Offer them with a manual transmission, GM. No, a "manual mode" isn't good enough. That shouldn't be too much to ask. You may have heard by now that people are buying more manual transmission equipped vehicles these days.

  • I think I will pronounce it as "ssss" rather than "essess" just to be a pain. I already call the F-150 a Fiso, might as well be equal opportunity.
However, I will never say "Naws" and will beat my children for such an offense.

  • Stu_Rock

I want so hard to get the wagon. I've always bought used cars with cash, but the Commodore wagon is exactly the product that could draw me out of that habit.

    • vwminispeedster

I'll buy your oaktown approved Buick if you need to raise cash for this worthwhile purchase. 🙂

  • Deartháir

    ::sighs:: Think they'll fire me?

    • pj134

    • Not if you quit first.

    • GM? Nah, they need more people who speak proper English eh?

  • Mmmmm…. Utes. I may have to start saving my credit..

  • FordEscortFan

Look, I know that Holden can never replace Pontiac but why can't GM just bring it over as-is instead of re-badging Holdens?

It makes more sense that way!

    • Van_Sarockin

Probably for the same reason that Opel flopped. They wouldn't set up a whole new dealer network, so it has to be hosted by an existing brand. And you have to explain the new brand to buyers, who've never heard of these things. Geo flamed out, but they sold a buttload of those Korean LeMans as Pontiacs before folks figured out how terrible they were. Of course, it did seem like it took forever for those G8s to make it though the sausage mill.
