Modern Art Monday: In The Lot At The National Corvette Museum

If you read any of my posts here over the weekend, you do know there is a Redusernab Weekend Edition by now don’t you? Anyway, this olelongrooffan got to visit the National Corvette Museum over the weekend.

Now one of the things this olelongrooffan does as often as I can is to shoot whatever cool stuff is in the parking lot of whatever car event I am attending. This is something shared in common with Redusernab contributor, Jim Yu, also known to Intense Debate as Maxichamp and within the Hoon contributor world as Jim II. Yeah enough already, let’s head to the lot.
First up was the Chevrolet Monte Carlo seen above.  That pre 5 mph rear bumper suggests to me it is a 1973 but I have been known to be wrong previously.

In the background of that image you can spot this 52 Caddy as well as a later model original bug, complete with the Herbie the Love Bug theme. I love the former, the latter, well Meh.

There also were a couple of late 40’s/early 50’s shoebox Fords. The featured one was a ragtop but the one to the left facing us was a beautiful tudor. Next to that tudor was some indistinguishable SUV then an early 60’s Ford convertible. Facing us from across the way, over that BMW roadster was a mid 40’s Ford pickup and a big Poncho vert to its right. On its left was a split window vehicle that I did not determine. I needed to find my boss before he threatened to put a leash on this olelongrooffan like a small child in a crowd.

But I do have this to say about that. This extremely, rare 1952 Desoto really was the prettiest car I saw that whole day.

And, of course, it is a longroof.

A '73 Monte Carlo? Whoa. I also like the two-tone paint on the red Shoebox convertible.

Faded paint is notoriously hard to match.

The Beetle is an FI car, so it's 74+
As an avid Beetle fan, Super MEH

    • Fuel-injected, yes, but not necessarily Super: I used to have a fuel-injected US-spec '77 standard Beetle. Still, either way, not an appropriate recipient of a faux-Herbie look.

Anyone else cringe at the sight of the Caravan parked in close proximity to the gorgeous Desoto? The thought of over-rambunctious kids piling out of it, filled with excitement and sugar, flailing wildly, so close to that impeccable paint… Props to the owner for actually driving it though, especially in wet weather.

    Diggin' the Monte too…

That's one of the reasons why minivans with sliding doors should be popular again – less chance for a 7 year old hopped up on pop rocks to swing the door open and damage something nearby.

      • Scandinavian Flick

Agreed. Plus, they're very convenient for parents. Especially the remote ones.

        • How do you parent by remote? Or are you commenting on the lack of proper parenting in today's society?

Haha, I see what you did there! You used my dangling modifier to imply that I meant something else! Clever girl.

It lets you adjust the dosage of the various medications, on the fly.

    • My last office was in the same building as a busy pediatric practice. I can't tell you how many door dings I got. I am so glad to be gone.

  • "Hey, why don't we take the Vette's to the Vette museum?!"

As much as I would like to ridicule Corvette owners, I have no real reason to. Most of them are alright.

  • That tudor shoebox is a '50 (style of hood ornament and Ford crest instead of F-O-R-D lettering) and the convertible is a '51 (hidden trunk hinges).

  • This was parked outside of the last event I went to. Look, it seats three and is for sale! I'm sure it doesn't want to kill me.

And it isn't any longer than a full size van. So easy to park!

  • Van_Sarockin

The selection in the parking lot is better than the interior of some museums I've been to. Nice of you to notice and share!

  • erljive

Parking lot is way better than most of the boring 'Vette's inside.

    • B72

Look! For this model year they changed the font on the badge! And the next year they adjusted the color of the tint at the top of the windshield!

  • Buickboy92

    That Desoto is amazing!
