Holiday Planning – Which AUTOart model to get?

Kamil Kaluski December 8, 2011 Redusernab Asks 89 Comments

This year my wife’s family decided (I had not part in this decision making) that we are going group gifts. Everyone picks their own gift and tells the group what it is and where to order. The dollar limit per person is between $100 and $150, split between five groups of people. Not bad.

My problem is that I don’t really know what I want. My first thought was to get either a gokarting gift certificate or an AUTOart® model to add to my collection. I still have a few gokarting gift certificates from last year, but the problem is that they cannot be applied to any group events which I have been doing. So, AUTOart® model it is, but there is a problem there too.

Throughout my life I had a bunch of cheap 1:18. They looked good from five feet away but I am a sucker for the details. Three years ago I got my first AUTOart® model and never looked back; super high quality, very detail. The 1:18s range from $70 to over $200. I currently have an orange 997.1 GT3 RS and a blue FJ Cruiser (moment of weakness on eBay) and I would be looking for something to compliment the two.

I have a weird taste in cars and unfortunately AUTOart does not seem to make a lot of the vehicles I am interested in. The below list is based off the models available through the AUTOart webpage. I am not sold on any of them but they seem to be the best of what I like.

  • Lancia Fluvia
  • Lotus Exige (wish it came in white)
  • Mercedes G55 AMG (wish it was military spec diesel and not the dbag special)
  • BMW E28 M5 (out of stock) or M535i (I used to own an E28 M5)
  • Volvo 850 T5R
  • Ford Sierra RS Cosworth

Give me your choice, Redusernab. Check out and make some recommendations. Make sure to stay under $150 (with shipping) and in 1:18 scale. I am also open to other model brands as long as they are 1:18 and of similar quality. Looks like Santa will also be bringing me a LEGO Unimog so I would consider something to go along with that. I am also open to something completely different…

  • Pretty much anything on this page: …

    Especially this:

    <img src=";

  • PowerTryp

    "I have a weird taste in cars". No Kamil, you're right in line with the rest of us. It's all those people who don't know anything that have a boring uninspired taste in cars.

  • $kaycog

    I would choose for you the Ford GT LM, #80515, at $129.95. Why? Because race car.

    <img src=";

    • FЯeeMan

      Because Ford GT LM.

      Don't try to pull that fancy stuff on us, Ms. Cog.

      • $kaycog

        OK 😉

      • That's all it needs to be. This is one cookie that doesn't need any sugar coating.

    • Van_Sarockin

      Somewhere, stored safely away, I've got this as a 1:24 Testors model, unbuilt in the original box.

      • $kaycog

        If I had that Testors model, I'd display it, unopened, somewhere. I have a couple of Hot Wheel Ford GT LMs, unopened, hanging on my garage wall with about 50 other 1:64 scale Ford GT's. But I do have a 1:12 scale red Ford GT displayed.

        • Van_Sarockin

          Oh, it's been opened, and all those lovely trees drooled over. I suppose I could have it re-shrinkwrapped.. I've only kept the model I built of a Mercer Raceabout, since it was the best of my assembly and painting. A few years ago I tossed my JB DB4, the Opel GT, the Lincoln Phaeton, the 450 SLC, the see-though, operational Wankel, the Honda Goldwing, and the 911. Somewhere else I think I've also got an unbuilt M1 and another Tamiya patiently waiting.

          • $kaycog

            Then maybe you should build it, and if you don't have time, keep it for when you retire and then build it. If I had the time, I don't think I'd have the patience to build a model.

            • Van_Sarockin

              I built the Mercer during insufferable summer nights, say from about 9-4. It was a very enjoyable exercise. And that's not just the fumes talking.

    • BlackIce_GTS

      Is there a real LM? I could only find pictures of models. AUTOart and Gran Turismo versions just have the wing, and the Hot Wheels version has an air dam and ground effects. Neither one looks like any existent racing version I could find.
      ; width=500>
      (click image for to make big)

      • $kaycog

        I think the LM is a Gran Turismo thing. This is Robertson Racing's Ford GT, which resembles the toy, but they don't call it LM……that I've ever heard.

        <img src=";

  • Take it from me, a semi-pro diecast car collector. (See my handle.)

    1. Minichamps also makes 1/18 scale cars of high quality. I believe they have more variety than Autoart.
    2. Have you considered 1/43 scale? They are less expensive, the variety is even greater, and you can fit more of them in your house/office for display. I've got about 40-50 1/43s displayed (both openly and in hidden compartments) all over my office.

    • scroggzilla

      Maxichamp endorsing Minichamps? What a shocking development? 😉

      Incidentally, he's right. Minichamps makes really good models, in all scales.

      Lastly, Biante makes some really good models of Australian racing subjects. Too bad the exchange rate isn't more favorable.

    • Why aren't you writing for us?

      • 🙂

        The Mrs. doesn't know the extent of my collection at the office. Whenever she calls to say she's dropping by, I'm like Ray Liotta's wife flushing the white stuff down the toilet in Goodfellas!

  • mudmonster

    If this wasn't sold out, this would be my pick

    <img src=";

    • Too bad there is no 3rd gen Integra.

    Can't go wrong!

    • I am partial to the LWB Audi, which is now on the list.

      • cheapthrills

        I was going to suggest the red one. It's how I pretend my FWD '82 Audi Coupe looked.

    • JayP2112

      Yea- LWB Quattros looks way more elegant.
      The shortys are brutal!

    • The #1 car of Stig Blomqvist is currently my first choice. Rohrl never won WRC in an Audi.

    • smokyburnout

      "Sealed Body Shell" isn't a feature to be proud of…

  • Devin

    I couldn't find most of what I like, but

    <img src=";

    How can you refuse a pioneering rotary machine?

  • I love Auto Art stuff, but it's out of my price range. I asked for 1/18 scale cars as Xmas presents for years and have now received so many that my display shelves are literally full and I'm out of room, so I guess I'm done!

  • stickmanonymous

    Definitely the Volvo 850. I love the idea that someone is slaving away in a dark factory somewhere churning out little yellow wagons that are nothing but trinkets.

  • P161911

    The Lancia Fulvia AUTOart model is probably better made than he real thing and won't rust near as fast.

    • dukeisduke

      Out of the four pictured at the top, I'd take the Lancia.

    • scroggzilla

      I'm partial to this variant.
      <img src=";

      • I want that car in real life..

  • Alff

    I'm partial to the axis of automotive evil…

    <img src=";

    • BradleyBrownell

      MOTHER OF GOD! I want that Alfa Montreal because of reasons!

      • Syrax

        And all the reasons start with Brown Montreal!

  • dukeisduke

    Wow, how come I'd never heard of their stuff?!? And, *seventy-eight pages* of 1/18 scale models?

    *picks jaw up off of floor*

    • JayP2112

      Where haft you been??! Autoart is great!

      I got my first and only AA in 2001 to complement my Bullitt. Had better paint than my 1:1 scale.
      <img src=";

      Pure sex is sold out… 🙁

    A TRANSIT VAN! But only because I'm strange like that…apparently there's 1:18 models of "normal" cars, like
    Foresters
    <img src="; width=300>
    Yaris (why?)
    <img src="; width=300>
    Civics
    <img src="; width=300>

    How would you fancy a brand new Kia Optima with a working sliding sunroof?
    <img src="; width=500>

    Everybody has some racing Porsche in their collection. Go different. But to explain why you spent a hundred bucks on a model of a KIA…

    Also, Kyosho makes a CTS-V.

    • scroggzilla

      Kyosho makes a LOT of cool stuff …

      For example
      <img src=";

    • I just spent a week with a Kia that looks JUST like that one, except it was white. Neighbors came out of nowhere to ask me about it.

      The Kia…

      They came over to ask me about the Kia. Having never asked about any other car I've had in my driveway.

  • dukeisduke

    A pre-acetylene FJ Cruiser!

    Or, because Alff beat me with the Montreal suggestion, and because this is better than having to live with the real thing:
    <img src="; /img>

    • dukeisduke

      Grand Wagoneer FTW!

    • Alff

      No it's not!!!!

  • Paul Smart 1000

    <img src=";

    • I am a four-wheel person, not a two-wheel person… but that is pure desktop sexiness right there. Holy shit…

  • Maymar

    How dare you not make your Christmas gift about what I want!

    No, yeah, I get that they're not for everyone, Did you see they've got a G500 in addition to the G55? Granted, it's still not an ideal G-Wagon, being a little too new money transport, but it tones down the douche-factor a bit.

  • fede6882

    IMHO, you can't go wrong with these
    <img src=";

    <img src=";

    also, the cortina, montreal, quattro and cts were already taken….

  • JayP2112

    Winner-
    Comes with "Dog" and Dogfood.
    <img src=";

    More expensive…
    <img src=";

    • Scandinavian Flick

      That is so unbelievably bad ass. I love AUTOart…

    • I just made an audible groan…

      I want that car so bad… not just in miniature. It's one of my goals in life to own and drive a Mad Max replica.

    • Wowwow! Must buys, for sure.

  • scroggzilla

    One of Uncle Carroll's Toyotas?

    Linky: ?…

    They also have it in full Nordica racing livery.

    <img src="; <a href="” target=”_blank”>

  • It's out of stock AND over your budget… but it's awesome <img src=";

    • pj134

      Winner.

    • Maymar

      I will only buy it if they consider including fender flags.

    • stickmanonymous

      Even a tiny Pullman is a tiny bit exclusive and a tiny bit expensive, and is therefore probably more authentic than anyone could have planned.

  • Maybe you should have your family up the $ limit

    THAT IS AMAZING

    • danleym

      That price is getting into the realm of "I can buy a real car for that." It looks awesome, but given the choice between 1:18 scale awesomeness, or 1:1 scale project, I'm going to side with the project everytime.

      Of course, my wife would side with neither, so…

  • pj134

    I don't know if you can find one cheap enough but… …
    <img src="; width=500>

  • Scandinavian Flick

    I am sad that they don't have my current car… I mean, technically they do…

    <img src=";

    But it's just not the same. They don't even have that in black. 🙁

    • Maymar

      I have one of the Ertl '04 GTOs. Sure, it's purple, but still.

      • Scandinavian Flick

        I managed to find one of those at a vendor booth at the Good Guys auto show a few weeks ago. They even had it in my color combo! (black on red) I am still looking for an '05/06 though, and I absolutely love AUTOart models.

  • One EIGHT SCALE!!!!

    AMAZING
    STUPENDOUS
    RIDONCULOUS
    INEEDMONEYSTAT

    • pj134

      They had a 962 also…

      I always figured you as more of the "Ultimate Corvette" type though.

    • That website is impossible to do search on.

      Someone find me a 1:18 Lancia Delta Integrale.

      • JayP2112

        • <img src="; />

          *movement*

    • The store that hosts Caffeine Cars and Croissants is taking orders for those. I tried convincing Mrs. engineerd to have a baby so we could sell it.

  • P161911

    Get that and fill it with Cobras and Daytona coupes. Just to watch heads explode.

  • I have 57 1:18th scale cars, most of them are in the attic, all boxed up. I've collected them since I was 8. I have a particular passion for collecting normal cars. Race cars are cool, but seem slightly irrelevant to me. Particular favourites of mine are my Opel Manta, Citroen XM, Peugeot 205 GTi, Plymouth Roadrunner (Non Superbird), Triumph Spitfire,

    I've not got that many AUTOArt models, just a VW Phaeton, P38 Range Rover, For Your Eyes Only gold Esprit…. and this; my answer to your question:-

    <img src="; width="400/">

    • Spoiler Alert: Maxichamp has a 1:1 Phaeton!!

      • That's what we call "being upstaged!".

      • Van_Sarockin

        The best kind of diecast!

  • BOOM!
    <img src=";

    DOUBLE BOOM!
    <img src=";

    Also, the fine Frenchies at Norev make some seriously cool stuff, including this coke-dealer-fabulous number that might rekindle some 300SD nostalgia (even though this is a 560SEL):
    <img src=";
    (1:18 Centra alloys sold separately or, more likely, not at all.)

    • Now I've got that Honda City ad song in my head.

  • MattC

    I have avoided collecting diecast for years now because I know how it will become a problem for me (you know mid40's with kids/wife/obligations). Yet, here I am "trying" to help Kamil pick his model and all I can think about is, "which car am I going to start my collection with?".

    • scroggzilla

      Consider the 1/43 scale cars…..1/3 to 1/2 the cost of 1/18 scale models, and much wider range of subjects.

      • MattC

        you are not helping my new potential addiction . I'll look into the 1/43 scale.

        • 1:18 AutoArt, [James May voice] do it properly.

    • Do it!
