Suck It, Prius: Citroen LoMax for the Discerning Commuter

Tim Odell April 23, 2010 For Sale, Too Cheap to Pass Up 17 Comments

citroen lomax for saleIf When gas gets up to $5.00, if I’m not taking the train I’m gonna be driving something like this. The is a Citroen 2CV based fiberglass kit car sporting a triplex of wheels. According to the seller it’ll get 57mpg at (slow) freeway speeds, but has no problem keeping up with the fast lane (80+ mph) with it’s four speed transmission. citroen lomax for saleThree wheels puts it in Goldilocks legal status in California: not a car (no smog, cheaper reg, etc), but no motorcycle helmet or M license required. The helmet might not be required, but given that the Mad_Science_day_job commute is 80 freeway miles round trip, it’s sort of a toss-up between a bigger windscreen or a storm trooper helmet for extra bug/rock/cigarette/pelican protection. Right hand drive would take some getting used to, but it’s all the better to get your brain working on the way to the cube farm. Given the quality workmanship visible in the listing the price is lower than you might think: $2k with reserve unmet, .

citroen lomax for saleHat Tip to DamnElantra!

  • Some good finally came from that rat-bastard Gallic turd-machine that is the 2CV.

  • Cute little deathtrap. The lack of protection of a motorcycle with none of the performance. The wheel configuration of a three-wheeled V-twin Morgan without the classic appeal. Looks kinda Brit, but is actually French. Nah, I'll pass.

    • While this example's probably not all that quick, I'd argue it's leaps and bounds better than a bike, safety-wise.

At least you've got something between you and Mr Lanechanger's bumpers. Also, if you get bumped, you don't end up sliding on the ground like a moving speed bump.

I'd seriously consider a contraption such as this. I'd prefer it be RWD with a bike rearend hanging back there, but FWD is really easy to do.

      • Actually, the Can-Am three wheeled things are that way, but you ride them like a bike, or actually like a snowmobile. In this case, what I'm referring to is the fact that a motorcycle is way more maneuverable, narrower, and taller (more visible) when taking the rider into account than this thing. Admit it, someone driving a dumptruck or even a Suburban wouldn't see this rollerskate over the hood if it was directly in front of it. Although, I'm being hypocritical, because I wouldn't hesitate to drive a Spridget or Triumph Spitfire if I had one, and they're not much bigger than this.

  • I think you should pull the trigger on this Mr_Science. If 2 wheels are better than 4, and 4 wheels are better than 2, I think 3 is juuuuuuust right. Also, British Racing Green? On a Frenchy?

The grab handle for the passenger must be there to help them sit down and stand up — it sure isn't for safety.

  • "According to the seller it’ll get 57mph"

    do you mean 57 mpg??

    • Yes, yes I did.

      Stupid alphabet.

  • ah, i forgot about that one!

Three wheelers pay toll where I live, pass.

  • You know what might've helped? Including the link.

  • How cool is that shot looking from back to front? That would be a great view out. Passing a truck or a Hyundai Accent would be pretty scary, though. Also, +1 for teaching me a new vehicle today.

  • Looks like it's got some x-treme camber in the front end.

I would rather buy a 2CV. And by that I mean replace my Volvo V70R by a 2CV. I already have a toy low enough to slip under a semi trailer (well not quite, but you get the idea), so I need a practical car. I does not much more practical and cheapfrugal than a 2CV…

  • Hey there this is my first Comment on a Blog….the good reason i am publishing this is to express my gratitude to the individual who provided this great info…it reminds me why i love the internet…thanks

Sorry to say, but as far as I know, there isn't a Lomax for sale in Texas, or even one to look at. In my opinion, they are nice looking little cars. I wouldn't mind having one if I could afford it.

  • Trent

I have the Campagna V13R, but the Lomax might be nice for something different.

Fast. "Too low" is not a problem…EVERYONE sees it !
