Release the Sea Hoon!

Jeff Glucker April 7, 2010 All Things Hoon 21 Comments

A Jet Sprint Boat is essentially a fiberglass coffin with a V8 engine and a racing seat. The cockpit has just enough room for a driver, co-driver, and their massive sets of junk. The driver of a Jet Sprint Boat navigates a course as fast as possible. How fast is fast? See for yourself in the video.

Clearly a Jet Sprint Boat is the wayward love child of a go-kart, wave-runner, and the F-14 Tomcat.

[Thanks !]

  • This is very cool. Nice tag BTW____And now a view from the drivers seat__[ 29vbm3p2j4M&feature=related... ]

    • how the hell do you even know which way to go?!

      • Follow the skid marks, obviously.

I, for one, want to see the bloopers reel from this sport.

        • But they are all brown and in a straight line.

          Here's one!

          • Grrr, the 2nd is this

            • Holy cow, those are awesome! Not much room for error, is there?

      • I seem to remember a TV show that showed the co-driver holding his hand up in the driver's peripheral vision and using the whole, flat hand to point straight, right or left. Might have been for something else.

        • I'm pretty sure I've seen the same thing. As well as the boats doing their best Live and Let Die impersonation and scooting across the land in between the water when they get it wrong.

Yeah, I used to watch these races quite a bit when they showed them on ESPN many years ago. I guess the coverage has gotten a lot more sparse, now that the network can cover sex scandals in their free time instead of introducing us to cool new sports.

IIRC, this racing is pretty popular down in Oz/NZ.

OMG, it's real life Cobra Triangle!

  • That's the first time I've ever seen a roll bar in a boat, and the reasoning is very clear to me. So if they miss the turn, how far do they fly?

  • Amphibious hoons, rejoice! Burbling big blocks, jet drives, unreal cornering, stagnant water! This race series has EVERYTHING!

In all seriousness, I can't believe how well those things change direction. I want to see Top Gear create 3 dimensionally identical courses – one for a kart, one for a jet boat, and one for a stunt plane, and see which one is quicker.

You know you've gone too far when you have to fit a roll cage to your boat…

    Let's try that again…

  • This may be the best-handling muscle car I've ever seen.

Apparently the solution for high-displacement handling is to simply remove the wheels.

    • If could lob a hundred or so gallons of water out the side windows at 50mph every time I wanted to turn by autocross car, I wouldn't need much by way of tires either!

  • Glad to see my post last week peaked everyone's interest in this crazy sport!

  • 35mm

Man that looks stupid, dangerous, mindless, wasteful and crazy.

    Where do I sign up!

  • Wow, they don't back off much do they! The tach hardly dropped while he was in the course.
